Frank Dixon's shop has been mentioned in other threads. I never noticed it myself as my route home from school took me in the opposite direction. By the way he was the brother of the comic Reg Dixon as opposed to the organist Reginald Dixon. Smile

Thanks for clearing that up about Reg Dixon. I lived in my dad's off licence in East Street which was roughly where the entrance to the trading estate is, next to the Brewer, do you remember this? So Dixons was our local chip shop, visited every Friday and if we had faggot and peas we used to take two bowls to be filled, didn`t bother with batches

Dixon's chippy was a favourite of mine back in the 60s. We would go in there after a night match at Highfield Road for a bag of chips before getting the bus home from Gosford Green. If it was a reserve match there wasn't even a queue! The chips, as I recall, tasted good because he used beef dripping for frying, and he had one of the last coal-fired frying ranges in the area. Just the job for thawing out on a freezing night. Thumbs up

Hi MisterD-Di. Yes I remember Mr Dixon with his coal bucket and big blocks of dripping. Do you remember the faggot and pea shop? All this brings back fond childhood memories

Hi all Wave Just enjoyed fish & chips from Glentworth chippy in Whitmore Park. It is our intention to try all of our local chippys over the coming Fridays. Wave

Definitely agree The Parsons Nose, I went in there often after the Mr George club through the 1970s, their food was fantastic, also I have never known any other fish/chip shop that served customers as fast as said that was way back then

We've tried the new chippy on Daventry Road now a couple of times now and can recommend it Thumbs up. It's not the cheapest but there's fast service, decent portions, a good range and nice thin batter. Be interesting to see if it changes over the next few months.

Hi all Wave If the fish & chips are as good as the cafe Italia breakfasts, they will be good.

Yes, you are correct! He didn't get a great deal of late night bother from customers either! I wonder why? And do you know who did the official opening for him when he took it over? The one and only Muhammad Ali! My mother was there at the opening and met him, she worked in the sweet shop a few doors away.
