My mother always quoted 'Mothering Sunday, Curds & Whey, Palm Sunday, Easter Day' Lifted from Google: What is Curds & Whey Sunday? Curds and whey - Out of AmbitCurds and Whey Sunday is an old, traditional Lent custom, particularly associated with Coventry, UK, where colostrum (the rich, early milk from a newly calved cow) was made into junket and given to the sick and elderly. It is a Lenten tradition rooted in sharing dairy-rich, nutrient-dense foods during a period of fasting. Anyone out there able to add anything to this?

Double thumbs up Mothering Sunday was about visiting your mother church, not your mother.

Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I'd say it's because card companies like Hallmark want to make more profit out of the generally gullible public. Cards are available for ridiculous things now, including "Mothers' Day" cards for Grandmothers.... who surely, by their very existence, are mothers anyway!

I completely agree Dreamtime. After all we were also the ones who did all the hard work in the first place. Both my children (now 51 and 53) were born on Mother's day !
