Some more terrific old footage from 1959-'60 here. The film moves on later away from Cov but some great shots to include a snippet of what was left on Fleet Street (viewed along Corporation St), Cycling at the Butts and a City match at Highfield Road.
There's another once from the same YT Channel here. It's not all Coventry again but includes the only snippet of film I've ever seen of the old Tower Tavern by Cook Street gate circa 1958. |

I have just noticed that on this coming Friday (19th), at 07:50am on 'Talking Pictures TV', there is a Programme entitled '1950s Puzzle Corner'. The synopsis includes, "Incredible shots of London Airport, Coventry, The Coast", etc. etc. I have no idea how long the Coventry content may be, but it might be worth recording. |

Apols if I have already posted this one but worth a repost. Circa 1990 and amazing to see how much has changed even since then. Includes rare shots of Park Court and the old Central 6 island/junction plus a trip on the A45 with the old BL and Matrix works still standing (though about to disappear!) |

Has anyone ever seen any archive moving/ground level footage of the Butcher Row area at all? There are some lovely snippets of other areas of old Cov here but only a few seconds worth and its only from one of the Spires down once Trinity Street had gone in - though you can see the corner in to Derby Lane. The bits of old Broadgate are so nice as well.
With generative AI improving all the time it may be possible to generate film from old photos, particularly if a series of photos exist. I have had a first attempt as a bit of fun - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoT5dHNyGjU. |

Hi William, welcome to the forum
Interesting trial you have there. In theory AI should be able one day, to take loads of stills, stitch them together and then move within it but realism is a way off. One of the things that I've found with old streets is that they hide a lot more detail than AI could automatically adjust for. Two houses that seem to stand next to each other might be separated by houses hidden by the kinks in the street line and even the road shape. A person walking down the road wouldn't match a real walk, if the hidden features weren't adjusted for eg a person's feet being obscured by a hump in the road. As a human it took looking at the map and plotting each visible house, to realise how much each photo was missing. Reflections weren't handled well by the software and the biggest giveaway was the window on the right.
I had a go trying to turn an old photo into a sketch and was amused to see it turned cyclists into cars every time.
Thanks for that |

I too had spotted the strange reflection in the right window - looks like a vehicle passing by, when one is not even present in the picture. A long way to go, but it has been interesting attempting to create something from these pictures. Agree it will improve over time.
My gran mentioned her love of Butcher Row in the late 90s and her view was that the city had been ruined. It was the first I had heard of the street. Having having left Coventry 10 years before, I was not overly interested in exploring further at the time. Not sure what triggered the interest, but thankfully a combination of this site and Peter's Coventry Rebuilt project has generated greater interest.
It would have been interesting to see Steve McQueen's new film, Blitz, set in Coventry, rather than another film focussing on London. |

Hello again
Still playing around with these different animation from image tools. Whilst they are not great at the moment, they do bring something to life, and will surely improve in time.
Here is the latest of Butcher Row - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKMqB4fmAf4. |
