Exploring Coventry's History Through the TV Archive
Ellen Terry Building, Room 101, Coventry University
28th April 2023, 5-7 pm
Calling all Coventrians! We invite you to join us for a workshop exploring Coventry's history on screen via the holdings of the Media Archive for Central England (MACE). MACE's silent TV archive is under-explored and we need your help to identify the people, places and events on screen, to help us imagine what we might hear if this silent footage had sound, and to tell us whose stories are not captured by this archive. We'll be serving refreshments throughout the session and showing you some rarely-seen footage of the city's past.
The project is run by Dr Jose Dias (the Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities, Coventry University) and Professor Helen Wheatley (Film and Television Studies, University of Warwick). They'll be working with a group of musicians, a poet, and VJ to translate the thoughts you share with them into a live performance which will take place in Square One, Coventry University on the 13th of June at 5-7pm, and to which you will all be invited. They are delighted to be working in partnership with the Media Archive for Central England on this project.
It will help the event organisers if you let them know you're coming by booking at:

- you can also just come along on the day!

News footage you'll see will include: the closing of Binley Colliery; Coventry housewives working as road sweepers; Coventry's slums; the Coventry Carnival 1959; a holiday for underprivileged boys from Coventry in 1967; Britain's first Asian policeman starting work in Coventry; the Coventry Indian sports festival of 1968; the Belgrave Estate in Wyken winning an award in 1963; a strike meeting at the Armstrong Whitworth factory in 1963; a painting exhibition for Midlands housewives; the Willenhall Gypsy camp; children visiting Coventry theatre in 1961 and many other items.... |

Apols if this has been shared before - some great footage here of the Coventry civil defence performing an 'H Bomb' exercise in 1954.
Its interesting as it shows the corner of Priory Row and Priory Street including numbers 17-19 in a real state of post-war neglect probably not long before demolition. |

Unfortunately, this film isn't available for viewing outside the U.K. Does someone think that these methods are still being used? |

I think that there are probably safer methods of getting people out of buildings now. |

I've seen a few better pictures of that corner of Priory Row and Street of that Exercise but can't for the life of me remember where there were? Anyone recall?
I thought they were on Historic England but drawn a blank. |

I know that the film has been linked to before, but I can't remember where or when. Maybe there were stills at that site? How long ago are you thinking it was? |

It was a few years ago Helen. And they weren't film stills. I think they were marked as wartime in error. |

Wow, what an amazing old photo! That's the first time I've seen such a clear shot showing the properties the other side of the road in that part of Priory Street. |

Can't recall if I have shared this particular episode however a chap called John K Wells on YouTube has some terrific 80s drive around videos including this instalment which is pre Sky Blue Way with the end of Ford Street still intact plus the Gosford St/Paynes Lane junction as it was with the White Lion. Great to see again- You Tube'd |

This one gets me - I'm staggered the old Goods Yard/Horizon Studios was still there by 1986. I just wish I'd taken more notice of it at the time. |
