Fish and Chip shops

There was a son born in 1911 at Silver Street, Frank Eustace Hubbard. Can't be 100% without the death certificates but it appears that the father died in 1967 and son died in 1987 aged 76. Maybe there are some relatives out there to confirm it all.

Why not ask the folks at Hubbards Florists? It may still be the same family (as opposed to people who retained the name for business purposes).

I guess it depends on how keen 'Radford Kid' is to track down a photo, he may just bide his time and see what comes onto the Forum. If the Florists are the relations of the Silver St beginnings, they may have something for him.

Thanks Primrose for showing an interest, I think Foxcote as the same opinion as myself. Suck it and see (an expression that means wait and see), thought I would make that clear. Can you still buy portions of roe from the chippie these days? Can't get it here, only tinned.

One of my distant relatives was Fishy Moore's second wife so my interest was piqued, I suppose, by the fishmongering connections! Now I come to think about it, I've posted in another thread about how I used to love the fish market as a child, and I have very happy memories of having lunch at the old Fishy Moore's restaurant in New Buildings so perhaps I have an inborn bias towards fishmongering! I grew up in Hillfields and came to the US in 1981.

There are very few 'true' fish & shops left here I'm afraid. Most are now kebab houses or other types of takeaway who serve fish & chips only as a sideline

Oh, I haven't seen fresh roe in fish and chip shops for years, it's that tinned, processed, compressed stuff in greasy batter. When it's in season, I always buy some from the fishmonger to fry myself. Not the same 'hit' as a treat from the traditional chippy as I remember as a child though. I see where your interest comes from now Primrose, well I hope for the both of us we get someone soon to shed more light on Silver Street and the various fishmongers dotted around . Although I like fish I never seem to frequent Fishy Moore's. I do know it was the most popular fish restaurant in Coventry. It's sad to see the demise of the old chippy but I think the decline has peaked, well I hope so. Colin.

I am sure it is Rkid, however, Fremantle is our main and best 'fishy' port where all the fresh fish comes in, but only go there every so often. Lovely place though, as you can only imagine.

Was that an intended pun Dreamtime? You said the chippy was such a nice place (plaice) nice one. As for us, we have a new chippy, a few years old now, it's called The Mega Chippy, Binley Road . You can always tell a good chippy by the queue waiting, they pour out into the car park. And for some reason Friday it's packed and from memory as a child when sent for chips on a Friday night I just new there would be a long wait. I think it was the combination of most workers got paid on a Friday and of course the religious aspect. Anyway Dreamtime our chippy is nearer to us than yours, be a bit cold getting them home from your chippy, lol. Colin. Hi Dreamtime Visited WA in the late 90s and stayed in Gosnells. Found a wonderful fish restaurant in Subbiaco called The Fish Place or was it The Fish Restaurant, it was quite unusual at the time as the kitchen was front of house, on view from the dining area, We asked if there was a fish similar to cod or plaice and was served Du fish, delish. Happy Days.

Hi Bad Boy, Well there are a lot of great fish & chip shops in Perth and out in the burbs although I think Freo. harbour takes some beating. Subiaco is great if you want to eat al fresco. Everyone has their favourite eating places. You mention du fish, yes, that is good. I guess a lot depends on the 'cook' . You can keep your squid - yuk ! King prawns - yum yum, Snapper - along the lines of cod too. Bon Appetite Bad boy... (Gosnells is the other side of Perth from where I live)

Yes I recall Freemantle being a lively place, it hadn't long had a makeover when I was there, something to do with an international sailing regatta maybe?? I particularly liked Cottesloe and its beach, enjoyed a glass or two at the Indiana tea rooms after taking in some rays all day on the beach.
