I remember both locations, couldn't remember the name of the original so I put it collectively as around Fairfax St. |

Does anyone remember a fish and chip shop by the name of Mayo's in Hillfields in the 50s and 60s?
Whilst on holiday in that county in southern Ireland last week the location must have jogged someone's memory, but no definitive answer.
I'm sure I heard mum and dad mention it years ago Question |

Hi, a reply from our member Mayjan.
"Hi Philip,
"Yes I remember the chip shop in Brook Street, it was owned by my husband's uncle, only I didn't know that at the time as I hadn't met Gary and was just a kid. Mum used to send me there with a pudding basin for faggots and potatoes, I remember that." |

No, Mick. Have a look through the 'New Buildings' thread - you should see the relative positions from the photos therein |

Do you reckon the best fish and chips are always the ones you were raised on? It took me ages to get used to Coventry's offerings when I moved to the city: I still find them pretty unpalatable!
Except for the time my future wife and I bought some chips as we walked home and there was a picture of me on the newspaper wrapping keeping the chips warm. She was NOT impressed! |

Hi Harrier,
That is often my experience. I'm sure that our tastebuds are fashioned from pleasant experiences. Not necessarily always from long ago.
Midland Red introduced me to having curry sauce on my fish & chips, five or so years ago. I didn't realise what I'd been missing. |

One of the best fish out there is from the Morrisons restaurant but their chips are dry and limp. |

I think this fish & chip shop was left to my grandfather in the 1950s by his aunt (Jessie Waters). I think her husband had left it to her when he died and I believe his name was Ernest.
Judging by the information here it must have been at no 31 Cox Street. I believe it had been rented out & run by someone else for a long time. The property was bought by compulsory purchase in the late 1950s to make way for the new Lanchester College. I think the compensation he received for the property was only about £200.00
Jessie Waters was my Grandma. About 1950 she (along with my Grandfather and their children) moved in with Ernest Waters, her Uncle so that she could look after him and the shop (as he was seriously ill and his wife had passed many years before). Jessie and family lived there for 5 years until Ernest passed in 1955. Ernest left Grandma Jessie his shop and house in his will for taking care of him all those years. Grandma loved and missed their rental house in Whitley so chose to move back there and at some stage sold the shop and house, potentially she gave, rented or sold it to your Grandfather. Grandma Jessie did not pass until 2003 and she definitely didnt own it then. I am presuming your Grandfather's mother or Grandmother was Emma Waters, Ernest's sister & Grandma Jessie's Aunt? Would you happen to have a photo of the fish shop at 31 Cox St at all? My Grandma Jessie actually worked their before she got married and met my Grandfather there when he came in for fish and chips :D

Hi Michelle, welcome to the forum
vulcanbomber hasn't posted since 2015, but you never know.
Number 31 after the war was on the west side of Cox Street, right next to Freeth Street. It was a three storey building. I don't have a very clear image of the building but this link takes you to Britain From Above where if you get a free account, you can zoom in. If you start at the Gaumont dome, centre top and follow Cox Street diagonally to the right, you can see where it was in relation to other buildings.
The picture below is well before the war and when it became a fish and chip shop, but I'm fairly sure that 31 and 33 was the tall building on the right. 31 was furthest away from the camera.
This is crop from a bigger picture and earlier than the 50s, but you get the idea. In this photo 31 is closest to the camera.

Anyone ever tried orange chips on their travels in the Black Country?
Chips dipped in a seasoned batter often turmeric or paprika.
Different!
Personally the smell emanating from a chippie is often better than the taste, fish and chips never quite hits the spot for me. |
