Sorry Dutchman, I have just taken a 'walk' down Fairfax St., and I can't find a chippy anywhere. Where is it next to? Wave

Hi Dreamtime Wave Haven't been down there in person but assume it's sandwiched between "Prague" and "Dogma". (Prague being at No3 and City Chippy being at 3a). Google Earth wrongly labels it as "Hales Street".

Thanks you Dutchman, I have noticed Google Earth is not very up to date is it. Can I just mention when I google our street it still shows grass in our front garden whereas we have pavers now from 2.1/2 years ago. I expect we have to make allowances for that! Back to the topic in hand, I was also wondering if anyone remembers Farmer Giles in the Burges. It was definitely there in 60's early 70's? Wave

Hello Dreamtime. I remember Farmer Giles very well. Used to have a slice of buttered toast and a cup of coffee after traipsing around town with my then girlfriend.

Hi Gangan, At last, I have mentioned Farmer Giles before quite a while ago now. We always used to go in there on a Saturday when in town. Hubby would have the Vienna steak with the bread and butty and the children and I always had the sausage and chips plus the bread and butty too. There was an upstairs but that was closed eventually, probably for health reasons. It was alway dripping with condensation, down the walls and windows. A well rounded man was behind the counter buttering the bread and taking the money. Tony got to know him quite well as he and his mates used to go in there during his apprenticeship days. It was always packed on a Saturday. I have got the impression not many people remember it. Wave

There is indeed a chippy on Fairfax Street, the former blank frontage has been opened up and turned into food units. There's an African takeaway, Sushi, Indian snacks and the chippy. These units are in what were the basement levels of Dogma and Prague. Grotty spot.

Wow. How the memories come flooding back. The "well rounded man" (we used to call him the Fat Bloke) and the condensation! Only went upstairs once and the next time we went it was closed. Not surprised. Had my first mushy peas there. You are right by the looks of it. Not many remember Farmer Giles cafe or the milk shakes they sold.

I love it when members say the memories come flooding back because I know what they are feeling. It's like communicating with the past again and the more you remember the more enjoyable it is. Wave

Yes, the memories certainly come flooding back. I only went into Farmer Giles once and I have to say the chips were pretty good. Wave

There is a cafe in the Burges called Buttons. Not sure but I think it was once called Farmer Giles. They do have an upstairs and at one time, they kept a little room up there, especially for the bus drivers to take their break. I still pop in now and again, the fish, chips and mushy peas are yummy and you still get bread and butter with them. There is still lots of condensation in there Dreamtime but it is an old building. Thumbs up

Hi there Mayjan, Sounds like the same, especially regarding the bus drivers break because I remember seeing them way back then. It was hardly cordon bleu but the food was tasty. Looking at Buttons on G.Earth it looks like the same frontage. Hope all is well with you Mayjan Wave Happy
