Hi all
With a hint of some sustained reasonable weather for a bit which is timed nicely for the school summer holidays, I am looking forward to a Belgrade bacon butty & coffee this morning & meeting with a friend. A good venue to meet as if ever there is a problem, there is always Conroy's coffee house a few doors down. |

Hi all
From the day it was introduced, the senior citizens free bus pass has been a political bone of contention. I saw this article in the Guardian - Scrapping the free bus pass
For me the beauty of the bus pass is not just that it is free. It is the fact that it universal over any number of bus companies. I would not object to contributing to the cost of my bus pass if it was so needed. I already fork-out £600 a year for my two grandchildren's school & student bus passes.
Part of the problem is the lack of understanding by our politicians, who fail to grasp the fact that as we have so many competing bus companies nowadays, that for anyone living close to a metropolitan boundary as we do in Coventry, most of us here would have to buy at least three weekly passes in order to get to say Bedworth, Nuneaton, Rugby, which are all outside of the West Midlands.
Since most rural bus routes, as well as many out-in-the-sticks Coventry routes, are heavily subsidized anyway, the cost of the bus pass is really part of that subsidy.
My honest hope is that the senior citizen bus pass will be seen as a loss-leader, not a dead-end subsidy, that it will remain free to all who would find great hardship without it & if it is means tested, that it would still be available to the better off senior citizens, even if we had to pay fee towards it. What on earth is wrong with that?
I tell you what is wrong, our politicians who fail to grasp the nettle, who have little or no concept of becoming aged. Most ordinary folk do not have the comfort of £70k salaries with gilt-edged pensions to match & can afford to pay chauffeurs.

Hi all
My out & about today took me to our new "Fargo" village, where I chanced upon our Coventry South correspondent, where she was in conversation with author Rosie Goodwin.
Rosie had officially opened the new book & coffee shop. The cakes were scrummy too!
The book shop, just prior to opening.
Meeting our forum member, just made my day.

Didn't quite know where to put this, but I thought I would bring it to any train loving forum members. We have just enjoyed a couple of rover days on the train, one more to go. If you travel regularly with the same person you can now get a "Two together" railcard which allows a main person and another named person 30% off many off peak rail journeys, rover and ranger tickets, and discounts off other days out. This costs £30 for TWO PEOPLE so it is well worth it if you fancy a few days out on the train.
