Shops of yore

They are mentioned in 1957, someone selling something who lived above Pearks.

In 1940 there was a Perks grocery shop in Atherstone. When we evacuated to the country the nearest store to register for our rations was 'Perks in Atherstone', 7 miles away from Sheepy Magna. I or my mother cycled once a week for our rations! Once we became regular customers they always had the odd luxury item off ration you could purchase without a ration book - a bottle of Daddy's Sauce or tin of Pink Salmon etc. There was little or nothing on the shelves other than the rationables. You couldn't just wander in and get your rations at any store, changes involved Food Office permission.

Hogarths - I was gobsmacked as a kid with their money system. The little cylinder that was sent off with your payment, and then one that came back with your change in.

If you use the drive thru at the banks here you send paperwork and get your money back in those tubes still.

What was the name of the shop that stood on the corner of Roland Avenue and Wheelwright Lane where Penderel Court now stands?

I thought they were somewhere around Jordan Well

Hi Neil, in the 1911 directory there is a Joseph Smith at 28 Gosford St and a Thomas Smith & Sons at 45 Jordan Well. They are listed under 'Furniture Dealers'. In the 1935 directory there is only T Smith & Sons, again at 45 Jordan Well. T Smith is listed under 'House Furnishers'. I could look further forward or further back but I think these time periods cover that photograph.

In the 1940 they were asking customers who have furniture stored to call at Warehouse 13 back of 18 Jordan Well opposite the shop. This could well be a warehouse. They may have moved around a bit. in 1936 they were at 45 Jordan Well.

I think it might be Freeth Street looking north?

From Britain from above, Neil. But this is not the same building as the mystery picture. That would make sense, Helen. In the picture, Freeth Street was opposite the shop. The shop would have been 45, the warehouse at the back of 18 Jordan Well but actually in Freeth Street (if that makes sense!!)
