I think it's a view from the roof of the National Provincial Chambers looking across Hertford Street and the remains of the King's Head Hotel?

And me! Didn't think I was in the right direction - thanks as ever Dutchman Thumbs up Though how sad Sad Apart from a single image from an ad from Annewiggy that she found a while ago and shared on here, that's about as close as I've seen of the inside of the hotel, though I never wanted to see it like that.

I was thinking about the watchmaker that was on the side of the bank building, before it was ruined.

Hi all, Seeing these great photos of old Coventry make me realise what a wonderfully historic and architecturally import the city was. Having seen some of the latest offerings, I wonder what Coventrians will think 100 yrs from now?

Can anyone help me please? I worked at the TSB Bank in Hertford Street from 1974-1977. I used to pop to a sweet shop more or less next door to the bank, (I think next door to the Post Office), for my daily ration of sweets. Can anyone remember what this sweet shop was called please? Katie

Hi Katie. Do you mean the funny little shop wedged between the bigger buildings? The walls were at a funny angle (tapering), and it was very cramped inside. I thinks it was just called Doualls, or something similar. In later years I found out that it was owned and run by a lady called Sissy, who lived with a younger lady in a big bungalow up Job's Lane in Tile Hill. The younger lady was quite big and mature, and reckoned the business was "a little gold mine". Her friend/partner was a much older, frail looking lady who wore glasses. That was in the 90s, and the business was still there. I believe it ran for some years after that. I daresay both ladies have now passed on.

An acquaintance of mine, who in now in her late 70s, has had a colourful life. In her younger day, she was once flaunting herself, one evening, on the steps of the National Provincial Bank. She was dressed accordingly: short skirt, fishnet stockings, FM shoes etc. She was parading up and down, and the police attended. They did not apprehend her, or charge her with soliciting, but allowed her to carry on, and did nothing about it. Oh my She was a film extra, a film or play was being shot, one of the scenes was outside the bank entrance, and she was in the background, playing one of the prostitutes.

The shop may have been Kunzle's (Kunzle Ltd.) in 1960, a tobacconist and confectioner.

Seem to have a vague and distant memory of Kunzle Cakes. Wonder if they were anything to do with Kunzle Ltd.
