The tall building on the right could be a clue. I think those in the centre were swept away for a new road. Could it be The Butts?

Is that a police station next to the cafe?

The area did disappear under the Ring Road but the old buildings in the middle went between 1914 and 1937. The buildings on the left (pub not a police station) survived. The new building on the right also survived the war and was another pub, although some of it was lost.

Possibly 'The Old Wheel' on the left of "The Popular Dining and Tea Rooms", no photo on old pubs, so a good find. Leicester Row for the Tea Rooms and Leicester Street veering off. Helen, see 1926 Leicester Row.

Heathite, Yes, I was about to say that. The tram lines are veering off the top of Bishop Street, the tall chimney in the centre was the baths in Pool Meadow. Opposite the Old Wheel (I thought it was the Canal Tavern, but you have street names, so I bend to your knowledge) were the basin warehouses.

Great work, all - I think that's right, isn't it, Helen? The Old Wheel was no.2 - I was getting confused with the Canal Tavern which was at no.5 and looked different, hence why I couldn't put 2+2 together. What was the building to the right?

Bingo! At one point there were three pubs on Leicester Row with just one house between them. The Old Wheel, a dwelling, The White Bear and The Canal Tavern. On the corner of Bishop Street was the Cranes Inn, which was demolished and a newer version was rebuilt further south and stretched further along Leicester Street than the original. As the corner building was destroyed during the war, it became totally located on Leicester Street. To me it looks like shops in the picture on the right, so the expansion of the pub may have happened after the photo was taken. On the last map it's all one PH. There were more photos of the cottages, stables and businesses on old Leicester Street in the Pictures of Coventry but they don't seem to be on the new site yet.

And another - it's marked on the Archives as Hertford Street but I cannot place it there.

The street sign on the extreme right says "Union Street". I think this building was where the old Temperance Hotel used to be.

It's too similar to be a new building, I think it is the same structure as the Temperance Hotel. It had a lot of makeovers. Thumbs up

If this is Union Street and has Municipal Lodgings Bureau on the building is it possible that this is 12-14 Union Street that is discussed under the Emma Brown topic, as I found several adverts for rooms to let for Alfiec on there.

Good idea Anne but 12-14 were further up Union Street which ran to the right and then curved north. 11 was just after the Union Street School. The bureau might have organised the lodgings though.
