I could be wrong Neil, but I think it was the Royal Mail sorting office! |

Helen, as per my earlier posts, here's that rare property included again next to Ford's, 1941 with damage.
The front elevation of 27 and 28 Greyfriars Lane and the access to Court 6, showing evidence of bomb damage

A good shot Neil. I was hoping that this building might have had old bones or at least it was in the footprint of the old buildings but as I wrote, the left hand side to about the front of the car (optically) belonged to the property next door. Makes me wonder if the foundation stones were in situ though... It would have dated to the early part of the 1800s. It's good to know the Coventry styles for different periods. |

Hi NeilsYard, I do believe it was the Road Tax offices. |

Suitably Chastised, Neils Yard,
I believe the Road Tax offices are in the picture - but situated further up, the other side of Salt Lane. I remember being dragged in there once by my Dad, as he renewed the road tax for his old Zephyr 6 (what a car!).
Those same offices are currently being redeveloped, although not sure what into??
Hope this helps?

Yes, it reminds me of when I was a little boy. Every Friday evening, I would accompany my dad in his old car, into town. He would park outside a furniture shop, one of those old single story prefabs after the war; I think it was called Holbrooks, just opposite Ford's Hospital. I was told to wait in the car while he nipped to the sorting office to catch the last post. He studied the form (football form), and did Copes' football pools every week, and had to make sure his coupon arrived in time, in case he won the big prize.
But he never won once, so we remained a (relatively) poor family. |

In the trade it's called either a "fixer upperer" or "handyman's dream". A few nails here and there, it's as good as new!

Gumnut,
Hi, now during the war the official name was an 'Holder Upper', assistant to a 'Rivet Fixer' - his sole job was to hold up parts, while the riveter knocked the rivets into the part that was held in a vice the opposite end. |

Thanks to Dean Nelson on the True Cov FB page - I've never seen this view down Greyfriars Lane before. Fords on the left and such a good image of the Cheylesmore Inn!
