Growing up we didn't get pocket money, we did get comics if we did the jobs given us, we had Beano, Dandy, and Topper, it wasn't until we were 8 or so we had 6 old pence a week, this was split, half saved for holiday money the rest spent, mostly on sweets I have to say. We girls collected "scraps" small colourful paper pictures of various themes, and swapped them hopefully for Angels, the really desired scraps, any one else remember these?

Just read all of the posts on this old topic, and lots of memories came flooding back. Comics, the Beano, Dandy, Topper, Beezer, Victor and Tiger. Toy cars, Dinky and Matchbox. Embassy records from Woolies. Girls comics for my sister, School Friend and Bunty. We seemed to have all of those as kids, but I don't ever remember getting pocket money. Survived somehow as a kid, doing paper rounds, bread rounds on Saturdays. Also, as a parent, I cannot remember giving my kids regular pocket money.

On the subject, I loved Barnbys and those glass cases full of the latest Matchbox/Dinky cars (pic dated 1966 so a bit before me but was still how I remember it from the 70's).

I remember the old Barnby's in Trinity Street! I think there was upstairs too!

I love this photo too, with eager children and parents in a very bust toy store. It doesn't look like Christmas either - just a regular Saturday maybe. So much more fun than Amazon boxes at the door. There's great two floor toy shop in the Royal Arcade in Norwich that I still love to visit. When I was a school librarian, a few years ago, I bought about a dozen glorious medieval knights on horseback for a display and the students loved them. They were even allowed to handle them!

Yes, there was, Prof. The various puppets were up there. My daughter still has hers - a colourful wooden pirate. She is 60 and it's still kept in its original box. Why she wanted that one I could never understand but she is not the fairy doll type. Actually, I thought Barnby's was in the Precinct somewhere.

Yes it was, Dream, as per the Barnby's thread.

Look at that nice tidy little umbrella pushchair - possibly from Mothercare. So much more convenient for everyone than the huge charabancs, complete with drinkholders, that families use these days.

Did it light up, Mick? All the kids had to have one. Happy
