More mystery scenes

Of those shown here 1 and 2 are Charterhouse mill. 3 is Well Street. 4 is Cox Street and 5 is the yard next to the Royal Oak on Gosford Street, looking through the passage from the street.

Sorry, I missed this one yesterday. It is the Sherbourne but it's the back of West Orchard. It's the other side of this Troughton view posted by Anne. Note the diamond glass in the middle floors of both buildings, which strongly suggests that these are brick clad, timber buildings and are much older than they look.

The buildings were still there in 1926 (map) but gone by 1931 (BFA). These do look like photos taken just before demolition of various parts of the city and beyond.

The rear of this family photo states that it was taken by the Stoke Portrait Co., 8 Clements Street. This, of course, does not make it certain that the family also lived in the Stoke area, but it'll be nice if it turns out that way. The distinctive pattern in the lintels might help to narrow it down. I've only had a brief look on Google's street-view yet, with no luck, but if anyone wishes to spend any of their time searching, it'll be lovely if we can find this house and find out who the family are.

I will have first guess - Is it St. Michael's Road?

Very distinctive lintels, but I've no idea where they were.

Don't think it would be correct to copy the google map picture but I am pretty sure it is 8 Clements Street. The lintels do look slightly different but I think the fronts of the whole street must have been tarted up. Where they are standing on the step there are a couple of courses of brick where they are standing and you can still see the bottom of where the gate post would have been. Only thing I am not sure about is the lintel over the door is smaller than the window. There are a lot of similar lintels in that area.

St. Michael's Road and Clements Street are both decent guesses, but I think there are just enough differences to count them out. The old picture doesn't have a row of fancy bricks that can be seen just above the lintels in Clements Street, and I can't imagine that all the lintels have been re-sculpted in St. Michael's Road. I've never even managed to drill into one, they're so bloomin' 'ard!!!

I agree Rob, the lintels in Clements Street and St Michaels are common in that and other areas. While lintels might be removed or built over, they wouldn't be replaced wholesale.

Coincidentally, there was also a photographer at number 5 Clements Street, which caught me out at first when I thought the house number had been printed incorrectly on the rear of the postcard. However, there was indeed a photographer at No. 8 - George Bott. He doesn't appear to have been around very long though, and doesn't appear here in either the 1911 or 1921 census. And in the newspapers, photographs credited to the Stoke Portrait Co. only appear from September 1912 until April 1913.

Sorry, my post is a load of rubbish, just ignore, I did not realise how many houses there were in Stoke with such a similar but not quite exact design !

I found something similar on Marlborough Road here, and part of Argyll Street here, part of Villiers Street here, so I think it might be somewhere older than Clements Street. Work away from the main road, to follow the building progress?

Oooh.... Marlborough Road, with the front gardens, too, is starting to look like a distinct possibility! Nice one, Helen!

And part of Chandos Street here. It definitely looks like they built blocks with one type of lintel and then changed to a different type. I think that the ones without gardens like Chandos were older.
