The road that crosses in the foreground is Centaur Road and the school is Hearsall (or as I knew it, Centaur Road). Maybe the spire belongs to St Thomas' ? If I'm right then the school was extended later in place of the houses on the far left of the crossroads.
Spot on. somewhere in the depths of my files I have the same photograph but taken looking in the opposite direction. The picture depicts the finish of a walking race with Godiva Harrier George Chaplin chacing a Leicester walker just before the finish line .................... so this afternoon will be a search to find it!!!

So instead of digging the garden, dead heading the dahlias, clipping the bushes, clearing the greenhouse, sweeping the leaves, searching through a couple of thousand photographs and dozen of files on a pleasant Sunday afternoon I finally found the picture .... each person on the photo was a Godiva Harrier club member / official.

Do you know what year that is Harrier? And I hope they caught the burglar climbing through the window at the back. My dad would have known that road well as he went to Centaur Road School in the 1930's.

The bloke who you suspect of breaking and entering Annwiggy, in white overalls standing on a ladder I can't see a paint pot but I suspect he is doing a bit of outside painting?? George Chaplin - the second walker thought it was 1952 as he had just finished his National Service and this was his fiirst race in civi-street. The cyclists were all members of the Godiva Harriers Cycling section.

Anne, Neils picture post 334, I found the man up that precarious ladder has some guts. Is he going up or is he coming down. ?

I should think he is hanging on for dear life, dreamtime, I had not really looked, I thought he was sticking up the poster but he is doing the roof ! Some people have no nerves. We were watching an old film the other day about men painting the forth road bridge, not even tied on. I was looking at the man in Harrier's picture about to climb through the window !

That is a ladder and a half! How did they even get it there?! I'm not good with heights and specifically tall buildings. My head even spins walking past the Cathedral and looking up! Lol

Yes, that ladder would be made of wood too. You wouldn't be able to strap that to the side of your bike as the norm in those days. I had a window cleaner when we lived in Lincroft Cres. around late 60's and he used his bike to get around. When my hubby painted the front of the house I was the one holding it at the bottom.

Changing the subject somewhat, but triggered by Dreamtime's comment: does anyone remember Mr Rogers the window cleaner? He cleaned our windows in Wyken. He drove an old Austin 7 and wore a much abused tweed suit. He spoke with a public school accent and persuaded our working class parents that my elder brother and myself should go to university. (Social mobility worked both ways in the 50's & 60's!) I believe he lived in Stoke Guildhouse. (Mods, please move this if there is a more appropriate thread.)

.......and a probably Post-War 'Mystery.' It was listed as Holyhead Road but again I don't think that's right. I initially thought it was the corner of Cheylesmore/Greyfriars Lane/Cow Lane as similar building on the corner but its not the same as the shop showing on other pics of that junction on the forum -
