Shops of yore

The name of the street seems to have changed several times, MR, at first Market Street South but later as we knew it as Market Way. In the newspaper in the later 1950's they stop saying also in City Arcade, so I think the reason for the sale in the 1955 picture would be the final throws of the shop there, so I agree MR it must be the City Arcade shop.

Helen starts to cry in confusion.... The City Arcade had squared corners. The Stones on the corner of Market Street had a shaved corner like the photo. If it is the City Arcade, the buildings would be south Fleet Street? Can we match them? I have matched them to Fleet Street. So it is the City Arcade. Neil was right to question the location. BFA

It became overwhelmed by the building of Coventry Point. Note you can just see the edge of The Market Tavern on the right.

Great to see this pic of Robinson's this morning on FB. I always bought my 'surprise' Valentine's bunches of flowers from there! You could smell the flowers right along the ramp. That spot was a bit of a muggers' paradise at night though!

Neil, did you know the lady who ran the shop in the 50s-60s? She was Mrs Pierce, our next door neighbour in Momus Boulevard.

Does anyone remember the two shops on opposite sides of the Oldfield Rd / Billing Rd junction? As I remember one was a grocers, Strides, and the other was, according to my wife, another grocers, Lee. The name Lee is familiar but I can't think if it was another grocer. I am talking about 1955.

Hi argon, it's a very complicated junction. Courtesy of Heathite and his directories in 1955 - at 2 Billing Road was William J Lee and Earnest Ashby, it doesn't say what business they were. Number 2 Billing Road was just behind 113 Oldfield Road. At 112 Oldfield Road there was a G H Stride Grocer. At 109 there was a butcher Jack S Farrell. At 110 there was a taxi service Charles R Gould.

2 Billing Road seems to be a general store. In the 1940's Lees are advertising tobacco and cigarettes and also looking for a lad for the milk round. There are different people in the 1960's and advertise as a grocers just opening a wines and spirits department.

Thank you both for the research, I remember Strides as my mother used to send me for goods on occasion. I have a vague recollection of Lee's but don't remember using it. The butcher I have no memory of at all. We used to go up Billing Rd often as my parents had friends there, the Pleydells, who had a sweet stall in the market.
