Shops of yore

It was the second shop up from Palmer Lane, part of what now appears on Google Street Maps as Remploy. I remember the store well from my childhood in the late 50s/early 60s as my mother went there once or twice a week. It was an old-fashioned tiled shop with marble counters along both sides, none of your self service there. I can recall the women prepacking butter using pats, sides of bacon hanging there and being sliced on machines, and the eggs being priced individually, sometimes including farthings in the price. I used to love the smell of the place. When Sainsbury's moved across the road, the initial shop was also counter service at the beginning, I think, before expanding into a supermarket. The old shop became Williams & Glyn's Bank which later moved to Little Park Street and eventually became RBS.
