Shops of yore

Hello JodyJoanne I remember it as being Kwik-Save as well Bejam bought the former Tesco store in 1986 along with many other former Tesco/Victor Value stores around the country.

On the Stoney Stanton Rd. over Priestley's Bridge and almost opposite Cambridge Street there was a little shop called the Catholic Repository. It was run by a lovely middle aged Irish lady and stocked bibles, religious tracts, rosaries etc. My Gran often went there for all sorts of quasi religious bits and bobs, most of which tended to glow in the dark - quite scary for a kid waking up in the middle of the night! There was a small stock of cheapish plastic toys also and I would sometimes be treated. I particularly remember a junior carpenter's toolset which kept me quiet for a few hours while I converted a bit of 2x2 into firewood.

Hi walrus, the Catholic Repository is still in the same place, well it was the last time I went down Stoney Stanton Road, not too long ago.

I worked there in the early 80 s and they didnt sell bikes. They were on 2 floors with white goods downstairs and brown goods upstairs. My manager was an italian called Mario Leone who we had to call "Mr Leone". Video recorders were still pretty new and were flying out the door!

Hi all, Completely new to this site so I apologise if this is in the wrong section. I am trying to get some pictures or even information about my great granddad's newsagents he owned with his wife Mabel. It was on or just off Lentons Lane in Aldermans Green, at a rough guess it was around late 50's or early 60's - A H Stringer Newsagents His name was Arthur Horace Stringer Pictures would be great but just information of who knew him and any information about his previous family would be great. Hi All Does anyone remember the poster and card shop which was on the side of the Hippodrome, in the '70's? Can't remember what it was called. I used to love it in there and bought some great things.

The Dome at the end of Hertford Street used to sell some cracking posters in the early 70's too. Bought a great poster of the Stones at Hyde Park there for 12/6d!!

Run by genial couple Geoff and Janet, a lovely pair. I believe Geoff was a one-time manager at Cov Theatre. Poster Place was an amazing shop, sold concert tickets before the evil Ticketmaster took over the WHOLE franchise

Thankyou one and all! Yes, it was an obvious name! I too haunted the Dome, I loved what they sold as well. The owners who were there just before it was demolished became friends of mine as they used to live near to me

I worked for Caplans part time Saturdays and holidays in Warwick Row, also their 1st shop was at Cross Roads, Foleshill, a branch at Bishop Street, Ray Evans of the Alan Randall Trio, also right behind us was Jackson's hairdressers, remember Vin the manager

Vin Gazzi died a couple of years ago - I think his funeral was at Wolvey, where he'd moved to - amongst the mourners was the model Twiggy

K, What you say puts me in mind of something I was told about 8 years ago, The only needles we make in this country now are tattoo needles, Whereas once we made all our own needles for knitting, sewing by hand and machine, stitching people up in hospitals, there must be others.
