Hello, I couldn't find an "introduction" thread so forgive me if I do it here. I haven't lived in Coventry since the 1970's and have only just discovered the forum. I am making my way through some of the long running discussions and have enjoyed being reminded of places and people that I had long forgotten.

Hello to all, I'm a newcomer to here with this being my first ever post. I'm an ex Coventry resident, having being born at the Walsgrave hospital in 1972, I spent all my life until 1999 living in various areas of the city. I was very aware of the blitz and aftermath but until I started following this site I was completely unaware of what the old Coventry used to be. The city centre was and always had been a concrete shopping area for me, with the odd old building thrown in. But now I know so much more, I am horrified by what has been done to what once was a medieval time capsule. Whilst not placing blame on what was lost during the wartime era, the actions that the city planners during the last 70 years are just terrible. I find the photo's fascinating, what a place it would have been. I'm very guilty of ignorance until moving to Australia which sparked a feeling of home sickness and an interest in my English self! So, please carry on with the stories and photo's as I can't read enough!!!! Take care Wave

What a great description of the old home town - a medieval time capsule. Thanks Gumnut - not heard it called that before. Oh and welcome from me too to our great forum, you will enjoy, I assure you Wave

I have got a lot of help since joining this site 18 months ago. It has come from members giving information and giving their opinions on all the different threads. It is far better than any history book as books only give the author's opinion. As many of you know I moved from Lancashire a few months ago - and this site was one of the instigators of the move. In Lancashire I was lacking in friendships. Whilst here, and in the sheltered accommodation where I live, I have friendships in abundance. Here at Willowbrook I have started a Coventry History Group among the residents. Very few have computers. (At 71, I am one of the youngest here.) With the exception of RCherington I have not met anyone from the forum in person as yet - but that will come. With my purchase of a better mobility scooter then I can make the town centre and back for a Saturday morning meet if it isn't raining. I hope I can meet more of you soon.

I Live in Devon now but had been meaning to write for some time that I felt this site is wonderful for linking so many people, many of whom I suspect may be lonely or housebound. The common interest in Coventry, past and present is great and keeps everyone connected. I think we all mourn the 'old Coventry' though. Long may your site continue.

To thee Rob, let many a grateful heart Our warmest thanks in gratitude impart Deeply, I see within your mind you hold Some dear, accustomed place well loved of old Within these lines, we read so much There is some living, individual touch While old and young with friendly hand Remind each other of a childhood land When we were kids, fancy and free In dear old Coventry.

On 25th Jan 2010 7:34pm, Rob Orland said: Hi folks! With so many people asking so many questions about Coventry's colourful past, it seemed to me that the best answer would be a forum on the website, so anyone can join in to ask questions, answer other questions, or simply reminisce about things that have occurred down the years. It's the first time I've ever attempted to build a forum, so if you're unsure about anything, or if something doesn't work as it should, either try the Help page, or contact me in the usual way to let me know what's not working, and I'll try to mend it! So, over to you - feel free to start new topics or respond to old ones... and then sit back and wait for someone to respond. All the best, and thank you for the wonderful support you've all given me with Historic Coventry! Rob
Oh dear! One day late, but, many happy returns to the forum for yesterday - six years old Cheers Cheers Cheers Cheers Cheers Cheers
