There is a dispute on a different site, about this issue. Can anyone confirm, when the no.22 bus started, did the no.1 bus route continue on its original route? I believe that it continued as it was. Any comments please?

The only change to the 22 route that I was aware of was the use of Mile Lane instead of Quinton Road.

According to www.cct-society.org.uk it started in January 1955. The service that later became route 1 began in March 1914. After the number 22 started, it continued to operate at the then current route until at least 1974.

For nostalgia interest, the pre-war tram and bus service numbers can be found here. And the route map at the takeover of Coventry Transport by WMPTE in 1974 can also be found on Flickr.

The bus in photo was hired from London Transport. The picture also appears at a slightly different angle in Coventry Transport 1940-1974. It says it was ST 481(GK5312), an AEC Regent with LGOC body. For any one interested in buses.

I have just found Neil's picture on the London Transport site and it is dated 1940. Owen Owen would have still have had the shell of the building then.

I believe the 1940 date is wrong. The first buses to be hired came from Great Yarmouth and Southend corporations in July 1940 although were not used until after the November raids. The London Transport buses didn't arrive until 1942. If it is GK5312, then it arrived in December that year and was returned in August 1944. source: www.cct-society.org.uk/corporation/buses/foreign_t11.htm
