Hi Anne Do you know what the wording beneath the photograph says? It looks like it could be a medieval building.

The newspaper is dated May 1915. The article is headed Traditional home of the Devils Parliament. It reads "The photograph is of the rear of a 15th century building in Little Park Street which is said was once the Roebuck Public House and during the Wars of the Roses was for a time the seat of Parliament. This assembly hastily summoned by Henry VI received the name of Parliament Diabolicum from the fact that it decreaad the attainder of the insurgent nobles York, Salisbury and Warwick. A Tudor Rose is carved on the right corner over the front door" I can't believe they pulled it down, what history.

Thanks for that Anne. I can remember the pub called 'The Bird in Hand' (I think that's what it was called) on the opposite side to Kirby House. I wonder when that old pub, the Roebuck was demolished and the old Registry Office, maybe on the night of The Blitz. I wish my Mother was still alive, she'd know some of the answers as she was born in Little Palace Yard in 1921.

It was still there in 1963 as this is a photo I took at the sister-in-laws wedding at that Registry office, if you look at the air bricks you can see the pavement has been risen in this photo, I've other photo's but they are all taken in the same place

Cliff mentioned a while back about Socialist leader Colin Jordan. TBH I'd never heard of him but very interested and amazed to see this........ Pathe News No wonder the crowd kicked off! What happened to that Registry Office - appears to be on Little Park Street but I don't recognise the building as there now? Post copied from topic Famous Coventrians on 16th Oct 2015 1:22 pm

I posted a picture earlier this month Neil in the topic Little Park Street which was a 1915 picture of the Registry Office. It looks a bit different but the windows are the same. Edited by Midland Red, 16th Oct 2015 1:27 pm (Mods note: moved here from "Famous Coventrians" thread)

Not sure Neil, but if you Google Map Little Park Street the building you can just see on the right of the newspaper picture has a couple of white lines on the corner. The building on Google that is now Wetherpoons has those lines as well so the building next to Wetherspoons could be a replacement or a new frontage for this. It was obviously still there post war as it is on the film. Also my parents were married there in 1945. We were married in the new one in 1969 which I don't think had been opened long so the change must have been made between then.

Here it is Neil. Kirby House looks a little unloved so this must be just before they did it up and probably pulled the Registry Office down at the same time.

It wasn't very old because it replaced this sometime after 1884.

I am also getting my houses mixed up. I did not realize there was 2 similar looking houses in Little Park Street so the registry office was not up by where Wetherspoons is but a little further down next to Kirby House where what was the RBS building is. Sorry.

I'm guessing it was taken from an upstairs window in the old brewery building behind Much Park Street.
