Here's another great shot of the Railwaymen's Cottages in that row as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I may have missed this from before so possibly not new to their site but Warwickshire Railways site has this terrific image of the yard, and a close up.

You are right, Slim. They were derelict and awaiting demolition in about 1970. At one point some of us used to go round there at lunchtimes. One day a group of us actually managed to demolish a whole outhouse, comprising two coalhouses and two outside WCs, in a lunchtime. We did attract the attention of one of the younger teachers who remarked that it was not only keeping us out of mischief but was saving money on demolition costs too! Lol One lad had a real downer on 'Fred' Perry, the librarian, and over a couple of weeks removed a few dozen books which he stored in a box in one of the cottages. Eventually Fred realised and all hell broke loose as usual. I think the books were eventually returned though. The cottages were often used for various pranks as I recall as they were so easily accessible behind the then new 6th Form Centre.

Not sure if I've missed this one before but returning to the excellent Warwickshire Railways site I found this brilliant image of the yard circa 1961. You can just see the roof of The Rocket and Warwick Road and that passageway under the roadbridge which is nowadays so slim.

Following my earlier image of Coventry's own 'Specials' on a press shoot behind Horizon on the goods yard - just found this one on the same day/shoot - interesting as its in colour! I've mentioned this before but my dad regularly parked on those cobbles on our weekly Saturday morning trip to town. This must be circa 1980 and as can be seen over Jerry's shoulder, there were still tracks in use even though it was probably just for storage.

Great shot behind the Goods Yard offices - one of those Scarab's? And that is the Railwayman's cottages behind.

Is that what they called those funny little 3-wheelers I remember as a bairn? Like a beetle, I suppose. Then there's poetry, the Ballad of the Scarab: Let's take a trip to Egypt's land And sing about a beetle who rolls about upon the sand A ball of something faecal Despite this lowly task of his He's not without some fame and scarabaeus sacer is His awesome Latin name Egyptians did appreciate This tumblebug so nimble And by a vote of twelve to eight Made him the sun-god's symbol Ten thousand images of him In copper, brass and gold And some in stone and precious gem Were made by priests of old The scarab found a cosy nook Within a temple attic There saw his picture in a book It made him feel ecstatic Space and time do not allow the other 20 verses. (Nor does my memory!)

No wonder he was feeling smug The honour was terrific. They'd turned this humble tumblebug Into a hieroglyphic!

He later saw the prophets' horses The day the crusaders came. He saw them murder, rape and pillage All in religion's name.

........ Had one ancestor caught typhoid And childless passed away then you'd be nothing but a void You'd not be here today. So whether you be Dutch or Jew Or whether Greek or Arab, The chances are you'd not be you If there had been no scarab. Let's give the scarab one big cheer And never do him wrong; It's by his work that we are here To sing this silly song. (The end. That's all I can remember.)

Warwick Road Garage have some more good images on their FB page - someone there is obviously into the history - is anyone from there on here? My dad used to park on there often late 70's - ... and another good one of the Railwaymens Cottages -
