I haven't been able to confirm the date of the demolition of the 'Old Malting house' from Newspaper archive as they haven't digitalised 1889 yet but I found this drawing.... Gosford Street

The first time I saw that sketch Foxcote, I thought it would hold no useful information for me, since there are similar photographs but it helped me place the buildings on the right hand side from their general shape. It shows a half timbered building on the right which I've got in the photo looking up the hill and allows me to place this building next door. Old cottage And next to that I think it was these building but I wouldn't put money on there not being another building in between. Top shops at start of Far Gosford The Old Malting House must have been built after St Georges Chapel which was finally demolished in 1820. Prior to demolition the chapel had been tenements and before that a guild hall. None of the images I've got seem to show it as a grand building so I don't know when it stopped being a chapel. St George's Chapel face on, road side This is an unusually detailed view of the road side of the chapel. I wonder if the bit of roof halfway up the chapel was the start of the original roof that was altered when the rickety top floor was added or did it always look like this? Successive pictures of the river side of the hall show the windows gradually being boarded up or becoming bog standard shapes. It wasn't always such an intriguing dump. The picture shows the edge of the building that connected to where the gate used to be. You can see what I initially assumed to be floor supports for the gate but since the brickwork looks similar to that on the New Inn I'm thinking it was either a similar building or the far end of the Malting House and the hall wasn't where I thought it was. Complicated innit?

Sounds very likely from studying old maps Foxcote Thumbs up At some time between the wars a new shop was built in the space that was once beheind the Old Matlhouse and all the buildings between that and the New Inn given a matching facelift. Up until then they were in a very rundown condition.

Wave I'm trying to work out what the building looked like on the south side of Gosford street before the big factory. I'm trying to fill in the gap between the Peacock in this picture. Old Gosford street The tall building is next door up the hill but I've got no face on view. The next picture in the series I've got is this one that shows the old Hotchkiss & Co and part of a building to the left. Hotchkiss and co Any help appreciated. Happy

Whilst sorting out some effects, ie going through drawers which haven't been opened since Methusalah was a lad, I came across some First Day Covers. One was British Flora dated 24th April 1967 and was purchased from, and addressed to, Ross Bros, 139 Far Gosford Street, Coventry. I can't remember them but I am prepared to wager that some Forumites will be able to give more info about them

While doing my family tree I came across a document listed in the Coventry Archives in which one of my ancestors in 1730 inherited a share of a property listed as 140 Far Gosford Street. The messuage was called "The Bishop Blaize" along with 2 other Far Gosford Street tenements. Where abouts would 140 have been ? Apparently The Bishop Blaize was beheaded c.300 after being torn with iron combs and he became the Patron Saint of woolcombers and featured in the Godiva processions.

There are a couple of pictures in "The Coventry we have lost" by Albert Smith and David Fry" (It is Volume 1 but it does not have a Volume number on it as when it was published they had not decided to do another volume !)One is 1916 with the factory being built but the other is 1912. Can't put it on here because of copyright.

Hi thanks for looking Anne, Thumbs up the first thing I did after exhausting Pictures of Coventry was order loads of books with old Coventry photos. I've got 'The Coventry We Have Lost' books 1 and 2. The photo at the bottom of page 19 is where I worked out that the Peacock is the last building before the bend in the road. Unfortunately artistic people tend to record the same views so often I've got dozens of the same stretch of buildings but nothing for other bits. Often it's photo of a pub or parade that gets shots that aren't in themselves photogenic but capture odd bits of the roads as background. I'm trying to produce street views with the oldest buildings I can find, ideally back to the medieval timber buildings. So like the Hotchkiss factory, I've got quite a few photos after new construction was started but sometimes nothing before. When I've got as far as I can I'll take what I've got to the Herbert and see if they can help me. In the mean time I've just ordered a books with Sidney Bunney's paintings.

There are a few sketches of Gosford Street in the Mary Dormer Harris book, there's a link here if you don't own the book, the houses are numbered but I don't know if that would be accurate? The Story of Coventry

That looks a very interesting book Foxcote. Flicking through it I did not realize that Lord Rivers and his son were beheaded on Gosford Green ( I have just been relearning my history after watching the White Queen on Sunday and reading Philippa Gregories books about the wars of the Roses).

No24 is completely wrong unless there was a radical renumbering at some stage. The images of nos 36 and 91 may have been flipped left-to-right as the hill they are standing on slopes the wrong way. The rather fanciful sketch labelled "Whitefriars Lane" on page 139 is actually Nos 111 to 113 Gosford Street. No 112 in the middle is the Black Lion Inn and the archway on its right is the entrance to Whitefriars Lane.

Is this the entrance to Whitefriars Lane from Gosford Street, Dutchman? That supposed sketch of 'Whitefriars Lane' was on page 239 by the way. Thanks for all the information, I guess all the other sketches in the book require the locations confirming. Inside of Gateway, Whitefriars Lane
