Thanks scrutiny, I knew someone would know the correct words, and, as you say, we were both close (but no coconut) and as Tricia says, not bad after fifty years. You have however, pointed me to a good site that is worth further investigation. Alan Cheers

No prob, enjoyed looking for Reg Dixon, found Nigel Hawthorn was from Cov as well. Reg was a bit before my time i think but his singing was not to bad. My favorite was Eve Boswell, my mouth used to drool when she sang "Picking the chicken with me" in the Pantomime at Christmas in the Hippodrome. I think i was about five and in love, lol Wink Thumbs up

Could we just set the records straight, should it be 'Coventrian' or 'Coventerian'? As I am a true Coventrian and always will be, I was wondering if I have had it right all these years, and yes I was born at Gulson Road Hospital !!!!!!

If someone is recorded as being born in Meriden district, I believe that is because they were born at Keresley Maternity Hospital, now the Royal Court Hotel. I was born there and think my certificate has Meriden on it. We're all Coventry Kids though! I believe the comedian Reg Dixon had a brother who kept a fish & chip shop in Paynes Lane well into the 70s. I used to go there for supper after night games at Highfield Road and remember how good the chips were. The frying range was coal-fired. Another Coventry sports personality is Dave Long. He ran the marathon for GB in the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics. He is still in the city and is an avid Sky Blues supporter.

Hi Mister D-Di. I remember the fish and chip shop in Paynes Lane. It was called Frank Dixons. Frank was a bit of a magician and used to do tricks when he gave the children change. You are quite right the chips were delicious. Wave

I couldn't help commenting on this folks! Wink What about Baron John Fisher of Kilverstone, First Sea Lord? "Dreadnought" Fisher. I know he wasn't actually born in Coventry, but was sent to live with relatives at Packington Hall at the age of 6, went to KHVIII School until 13, then to sea in 1854 on HMS Calcutta. KHVIII was very proud of him when I was there, and rightly so. He must qualify as a Coventrian surely?? Incidentally, I see Sir Frank Whittle was cited. He was actually born in Lancashire. Again came to Coventry at an early age.
