Hi Kaga,
There is a field next to the wood with the tram. I've had a look at my photos and I can't see any white railings, but I only went as far as the tram, not beyond.
This view from Google Streetview shows the field next to the tram (the tram is in the wood on the right). I can't see any white railings, but that doesn't mean there never were any. |

It was the racing stables of (surname) Arthur, and that old tram was his viewing point in bad weather for visitors. When he bought it, it was almost brand new, and they could watch the working of the horses whatever the weather. I forget his first name but he owned the wholesale business of a plumbing and heating warehouse in the large house at the top of Bishop Street in the 1950's. It was the old basin control house. |

This area has always been wooded and it's not near enough to the open field to be used as a viewing spot but that doesn't mean that it was always there or that there might have been more than one.

My friend Dean Nelson shared this one today which Rob also has in his collection. What interests me is it appears to show that the tramline heading down Hertford Street has already stopped/been removed? I thought it was only post-blitz/war when this had happened?

In 1932 trams were withdrawn from Smithford Street because of congestion. As a result, the Allesley Old Road tram route was decommissioned and replaced by a bus service. In 1936, the Ford Street loop was decommissioned. A year later, trams were withdrawn from Hertford Street because of congestion and the route to the Station and the Earlsdon route were both decommissioned. The routes were replaced by bus services. The following year the Stoke service ceased, although it was not formally abandoned until 1940. Finally, after the November 1940 air raid, the entire tramway network was abandoned and Coventry Corporation Transport became entirely bus operated. |
