Excellent one that one Neil. I remember the back of the Broomfield overlooked the backs of those cottages, or rather a grassy overgrown area looking at what is there now.

These buildings look partly demolished. Any idea of year Neil? I guess that's where the Bethel Church and Coventry Motor Sundries was built. Would I be right?

Close. The chapel was built to the left of the picture, on the remains of the Cock Court. The Broomfield was built in the garden of the Inn.

Just look at all the people in those streets! These days, you wouldn't meet so many in a fortnight! No wonder people nowadays are scared stiff of strangers - we never meet any! And kids safely and healthily walking or push-biking to school WITHOUT mummy or daddy to drive them there (in case they should encounter any strangers!). Whatever could their parents have been thinking? Shame on them!! Economic progress (and particularly the private motor vehicle) has come at a terrible price! Or am I just getting old? OK - the question here is NOT "am I getting old".............................. Wink Wink Wink

Every time I look at this picture I think that the lad in the coat with his hands in his pockets looks so much like my dad. He lived in Melbourne Road and was born in 1916 so if this picture is late 1920's it could well be him.

Hi Annewiggy, I used to buy from the tropical fish shop in Melbourne Rd. The business moved to south of Leamington, still with the name Melbourne Aquatics.

Another great fascinating picture you have shared Neil. When I lived at the Broom there was never that many people around under the arches even on a Saturday. In my humble opinion looks like the children are going home after school and the people are leaving their workplaces. They say a picture paints a thousand words. Sherlock Holmes would analyse that for us. Roll eyes

As old as it was I enjoyed living in Spon End at the Broomfield. A lot of genuine and happy Coventrians lived there. I think time stood still for a great many years in that part of Coventry. Smile

How eerie that was as it was always so dark but we used to sing most of the way till we reached the Holyhead Road and civilization! If my memory serves me correctly was that along Four Pounds Avenue?
Yes, Dreamtime, I remember many times going to the Plaza along the 'blackpad' (Chain Gardens), they were allotments, and later this disappeared I believe under Four Pounds Avenue. This was when my grandparents lived in Malvern Road and granddad worked at the Alvis.
