That's great Rob. It seems to be doing just what it is supposed to now. The next time I power everything down, I'll check to see if it picks me up first time.

No problem, always a pleasure to try and make the forum better to use. And sometimes it takes a little prompting from messages like yours to inspire me to improve things! I'd also like to add to the forum, if it's thought useful, the ability to add little "smilies" - just a few basic ones. That'll take a bit longer though, so I'll look into it when I get more time. I'm OK with PHP but haven't yet got my head properly around JavaScript. For the odd few things I've used it for I usually manage by "reverse engineering" other people's pieces of script!

Smilies / emoticons

Well, it had to happen eventually. I've finally got round to putting some daft faces on the forum, so we can all let others know in a more graphic sort of way how we feel or what we mean. Thumbs up They're just the basic ones for now, but if anyone needs to show any other "emotions", please let me know, and I'll try to find something suitable. Wink I'll now sit back and wait for the outlandish ideas to come rolling in. Cheers! Cheers

Oh my Oh! Do the "Link" and "Image" buttons at the top work? I've used the same JavaScript as for those. When you click a "smiley" do you get a "|SMILEYNAME|" bit of text appear in the text-editor box? I can't presently think of why it shouldn't work - let's see if others find the same problem.

Just as a quick bit of fault-finding.... 1. Does the "Insert selected image" button at the top work? That button is the only one using the original piece of JavaScript. 2. If you hover your mouse cursor over each smiley, do you get the pop-up title of each one? 3. If you manually type "|smile|" - but put "smile" in all capitals - does it show in the preview when you press "Review post"? I'll have to look tomorrow to find out your reply - I'm off to bed now! Night night!

That's great news, thank you for letting me know. Saved me a bit of trouble too, because I was wondering how I could fix something that I can't see is faulty on my own computer! Was it an issue with JavaScript on your PC, or was it a "page refresh" sort of problem with cashed memory? (Or neither of the above!)

I haven't changed anything at this end Rob except for turning the PC off overnight.

Ah, it does sound like the cache needed refreshing then - it almost certainly still had my previous "script" in memory. Let's hope not many others get the same problem. It might be worth setting the "Browsing history" settings to check for new pages "Every time I visit a webpage" in Internet Explorer, if that what people still mainly use. It avoids the caching problem on many other websites.

Well, even though I'm still on the good ol' Isle of Wight, I've had a couple of hours on one or two evenings, once the kids are tucked up in bed, to turn my attention to making small improvements to the way this forum works. We've had rather patchy internet access, just a few minutes here and there, and I hope this session lasts long enough now for me to complete this message!!! One addition is the Statistics page, the link for which is at the foot of each page. You will see a series of graphs showing weekly, monthly and yearly stats for the members who have left the most messages for each period, and then the topics which are the most popular. I've also now, after a much valued chat with a member (thanks Cliff !) found a way to allow members to edit any previous message of their own. A little red Message edited.... note, along with the date and time, will appear after any message that has been altered. I hope this will be useful to folk who wish to change images or similar things. Right, off to the beach! Cheers, Rob P.S. I forgot to add - if your message has not yet been responded to, then you can also delete it, but once another post has been left then the "delete" button disappears. If this works as it should, then that red line I mentioned should appear below this....

Great additions - thanks Rob! In the next round of updates, would it be possible to allow a thread title to be edited/corrected? I posted recently and mis-hit the "K" key and Lockhurst became Lochurst in the title. Makes me look a right div! Big grin Tony
