I've a feeling that St John's acquired more clock faces.

Thanks everyone, Yes, as soon as I saw Edridge I had no doubts about the painting. I have seen his work at the Tate, long time ago, more as a portrait painter, but I never had any book about him, and I got mixed up - it was Constable that painted, not Coventry but Salisbury Cathedral from the bishops grounds in 1823, but it's farther away and I do not have the ability to see if there is the same type of clock, but their paintings are similar. Constable was a few years later. Constable also painted the Gothic house in Brighton.

I'd never heard of Edridge. The picture is part of one showing the Priory Mill pool but it's mislabelled 'Jordan Well'. Many artists capturing Coventry didn't know where they were standing. Constable took copious sketches of the city but they're too sketchy to be useful. Thanks Anne Thumbs up

Morning Helen. I think we've had this one before but cannot find or recall what our thoughts were about it - its allegedly "Children playing in the street behind Holy Trinity 1924" but I cannot picture where?

Found it Neil! It was this topic.... Street behind Holy Trinity Church. Fortunately, the link given by Foxcote to the Mirrorpix site still works. Thumbs up

The conclusion was that it wasn't Coventry but I will review it, in light of the Mirrorpix photos sometimes being flipped left to right. It's still unlikely to be Coventry as the materials used are wrong for Coventry. Most poor areas of Coventry were either 2 storey timber or 2 to 3 storey brick.

Cheers, Rob - knew I'd seen it before. And thanks, Helen - you are the expert and to me it did not look like any court that we already knew about in terms of style / location etc

The only place it might be (because of a lack of images of that area and it being the only place with a substantial slope) is the top of Hill Top but I can't find a suitable layout on either the 1850 map or the 1898 map with the photo as presented or flipped which pretty much rules out Coventry.

Prof. Something you don't see these days, glass embedded on the top of walls (presuming that's what it is in Rob's postcard)

It kept 'em out, didn't it, Dream! H&S for you though. Historic England have some excellent close-ups of the bell tower although frustratingly I'm yet to see one of the interior.
