Hi dreamer, by the Villa Road church do you mean the Congregational on the corner? I did attend there in the early 1960s, would she have been singing then?

Hi Anne. Yes, that's the right church. She would have attended it through the 1960s with my grandad, Fred Garner. She was a key member of a singing group called The Radford Singers. I don't remember much about the group because I was only young when it finished but you probably knew her from the church. It's sad that the church got demolished and an Aldi is on the spot now.

Slightly to the right of centre on this 1934 BFA you can see the Victorian Radford School that was later to be destroyed in the blitz. It was almost as if they had left the area at the back to build the new school in the early 50’s. You can just about see the road that I lived in until I married, Lawrence Saunders Road, to the right of the school leading to the right fork of Poole Road! The Grapes public house can be seen on the left of the picture.

The Ellys Road railway bridge, gosh that takes me back, the number of times I walked over that walking to Sandy Lane

The sides are higher than I remember but it's still the small bridge it always was. It appears that the Chamber of Commerce is now next door to it.

This bridge and the Daimler Road footbridge were replaced c2010. The new bridges have higher sides and a mesh cage roof to deter vandals etc. .

The one I remember had quite a big arch with wood across at intervals to stop you slipping. It was not much fun in the ice and snow.

That explains its new appearance, Pete. It isn't as I remember it.

Anne, I do remember the arch. I wonder if there are any photos of the old bridge?

Great image of a busy Jubilee Crescent

What a lovely nostalgic picture. Thanks for posting. My gran would have been in Whaleys Croft, where I was born, Auntie Bridie in Capmartin Road. Several more of our family in Beake Avenue. My grandad probably in the Pilot. Even the car looks like my dad’s Morris Oxford he bought from his card winnings in 1955. Then there are the women all wearing the ubiquitous long heavy coat. Brilliant!

I worked weekends in the sweet shop, The Candy Box, just off the right of the picture, in the early 60’s.

I lived close to Jubilee Crescent from 1971, so this photograph is fascinating! I recognise some of the shops - Moores bakery and, of course, Woolworths - but, for me, the most surprising thing is that it appears that Jubilee Crescent was once ‘two-way’ traffic (cars visibly parked, facing the ‘wrong way’!!). I can only remember one-way traffic - but, then again, I don’t remember that police box either, so perhaps we’re talking 1960s here?? Car buffs, step forward.

The Austin or Morris J2 van outside Taylors Supermarket was first introduced in 1956 so it can't be before then. The light coloured Ford Consul or Zodiac by the telephone kiosk was also introduced in 1956. Most of the cars are those which were around in the 40's, 50's, and very early 60's but no Ford Anglia, no Mini and no Triumph Herald. all introduced in 1959 so I would guess that the photograph was taken between 1958 and 1960.
