I notice in the link above how a piece of our important history is soon forgotten that's still here and is missing - Cash's.

Cultural offering: Lady Godiva, Coventry Cathedral, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, St Mary's Guildhall, Coventry Transport Museum, Coombe Abbey, London Road Cemetery, Godiva Festival, Philip Larkin, 2-Tone... we're running out of space! No doubt Cash's would be included if there was more space for a longer list Roll eyes

Incidentally, Aberdeen does have a couple of things in common with Coventry today that it didn't have years ago one, both cities have no confidence in their local authorities (as mentioned in another thread) and secondly with the universities, the city centre is full of student accommodation! IMHO Coventry has a lot more in its favour Big grin

I'd say this is the worst of the major cities for culture. You tend to have to go elsewhere if you want to see a band, as there's no real live music scene in the city anymore. Some interesting small stuff, but compared to Cardiff Coventry is pathetic.

With respect, Cardiff is a capital city of which the Welsh are quite proud. Coventry is a worn out industrial town, trying to build into a modern city that looks promising while in the meantime the residents have no problem in voicing disapproval of what goes on in the city especially with regard to students. LOL

I know exactly what Cardiff is, as I have spent a lot of time there. Coventry hasn't been an industrial city for 30 years and it's as far from being a 'modern' city as it was in 1930.

So it's still a work in progress.

The advertising version of the city's bid It sounds... ummm... riveting. Now I know that they can't give all their secrets away but I find the usual buzz words a total turn off. Meanwhile Warrington's bid (snigger) has more charm but amounts to little more than 'we've got no history or culture, but we'd like some'. You never know, it might win on originality and bald honesty. Sweet video but more style over substance. Nah.

I have just finished reading a fiction book "Working Wonders" by Jennie Colgan. Which turned out to be a slightly bizarre book about a man in Coventry Town Planning department being given the job of coming up with the city's plans for City of Culture 2005 (it is a 2003 book). After looking at Helen's post the ideas weren't so out there!
