I thought I was simply answering your question, Mick. Perhaps someone else would like to discuss this with you.

Helen, the A45 and the M6 are straight roads. How does that qualify as a ring? I cannot find any reference to an outer ring road, other than suggestions by members.

Hi Mick - Primrose may be alluding to the fact that the Ring Road acts as a barrier to the outward development of the Central Business District. It acts as a physical and mental "edge" from one type of district to another. Developers see these districts as distinct, so would not develop shops, for example, outside of the Ring Road. I agree, though, that the Ring Road is excellent in its primary aim, i.e. to deflect cross-city traffic from travelling through the centre.

Hi Mick - the purpose of a Ring Road is to enclose an area so that traffic can be diverted from that area. It is not a circular road - but it must start and finish in the same place, like our Ring Road or the M25. Apologies for being pedantic - I was a Geography teacher in a previous life.

Hi belushi. Long time, no hear from. Thanks, do not think you are pedantic. But you have backed up my argument regarding the A45 & M6

Hi Mick - may not have posted for a while but always lurking Lol The A45 was built in the 1930s so that London to Birmingham traffic could bypass Coventry. The M6 was constructed in the 1960/70s so that traffic from London to the North could avoid Birmingham. In the 1990s the A46 Eastern Bypass was built so that North/South traffic could avoid Coventry. All bypasses then. If they were to be joined they would by default be an outer ring road, except that subsequent development has rendered the A45 as a non-bypass.

MR, I do find that pictures like that help orientate the past with the present. I see the Woolpack on Spon Street in the distance.

CliffB has done it again and come up with this great (but sad) image of the RR going up in 1963. I think they are the ends of Albion Street and Rudge Road about to bid farewell and gives another good indication of the amount of clearance needed to get the thing in! A good comparison with Cliff's slightly later shot above.

Sad for those who are forced to move but sadder for those who get left living with it.

Unveiled this morning (pic (c) a FB user as I was driving!), ironically the same section as the recently posted images above. Well it’s different!

Car park seems rather empty. I guess it's still used as such?

It could have been photographed while many were still working from home but I've a feeling that one of the carparks under the Ring Road was shut. I can't remember if it was blocked off due to roadworks/building activity or was going to be repurposed.
