House of Industry, Brick Kiln Lane

Heathite David Fry, Coventry historian and author, has kindly confirmed the location of the House of Industry (as suggested by yourself) by referring to an 1809 strip map, made to show the length of the canal from Coventry to Fazeley. He says it is the ONLY time he's ever seen it noted on a map!!

Oddsock. Today we seem to look at things as if in black and white, but it's not the case. Few people bothered with rules and regulations - look at the number of old chapels that have been converted for other uses, thousands of plots of land in the thirties were converted to allotments, the whole area between Lythalls Lane and the Foleshill Road became allotments and fire station. The buildings between Foleshill Road, the canal and Old Church Road became another part of Courtaulds, 1925, who had come from Ipswich in 1908. The gasworks had moved to Foleshill in 1908 too - the list is endless and most had no registers or records. Soon people will forget the cemetery, cinema and the great mill.
