I'm sure that we all wish the redundant staff well. I spoke to a long serving staff member yesterday. She said "Who wants me in my sixties?". To which I replied "I do". She then told me, she already had one like me at home. There's always a snag, Steven Lewis (Smiler or inspector Blakey) would often say.
Not good news, but not surprising in this day and age. I was in the Kenilworth branch last week, but didn't notice any closing down sales signs.

Hello, Traders use an economic formula that signifies the relationship between footfall & disposable income per population. During the sixties, Coventry had the highest index of anywhere in the UK for a short period, outstripping London. Stratford & Kenilworth are way in front of Coventry. The restaurant chain Bistro Pierre, still remain in Stratford & Leicester, having moved out of Coventry last Feb. I hope they continue.

Hello, I often hear discussions regards shops that were once so numerous, now almost extinct. Walking passed the corner of Roland Ave, was once the hardware shop of Mr. Decani. I've many items in our home that came from his hardware shop. So much that we took for granted was the bye-product of a manufacturing economy. Screws, glassware, paraffin, china, creosote. The list goes on & on. The UK now imports most of that now, including coal.

A long time ago, probably about 1972, my long departed friend was driving his old Humber Super Snipe down Wheelright Lane when another car emerged from the junction with Hen Lane, crashed into my friend's car, and pushed it across the road into Mr Decani's shop window. My friend was unhurt but his old car was a write off.

There is an A E Allen butcher advertising in Butchers Lane, I think this may be Aubrey Allen's shop who had several shops around the City.

Aubrey Allen's were another of those brands to whom many in the 80s knew their Ads on Mercia Sound more than their actual shops! I'm singing it now in my head!

I got the impression it was a local family run butcher's in Allesley village. Aubrey Allen had a shop at the top of Winsford Avenue Allesley Park.

Taken from the Aubrey Allen business webpages, the butcher business was started by Aubrey Allen in Hillfields in 1933. https://aubreyallen.co.uk/history/ While no direct mention of Allesley, it does say business is booming up to WWII, where Aubrey Allen enlists to serve his country. It's quite a fascinating read, from a penniless orphan to successful butchers with a post war London Hackney Carriage business in-between, where he meets his wife, Gladys.
