I imagine that's what he wants you to think- it's all Prestidigitation of the highest order I'll have you know It sounds like Professor Emblow was quite well known in the 1880s and 1890s, there's a lot of newspaper reports about him in shows and bazaars. Sadly, I don't think many celebs are going to be well known in 145 years time. ¹⁸⁸⁸

For the living waxworks, I'm wondering if it was a similar concept to today's trend of "human statues", who stand completely still in places like town centres and then suddenly move or wink or whatever to startle passers by? I guess it's another example of the way our language and dictionary has developed over the last century or so, and "the grave and the gay" was simply "sad and happy people". (Or more lately, & !)
