Yardley family

All - apologies as this does stray in to my 'Yardley Family History' in topic but… I never met my paternal grandfather as he sadly passed away in the early '60's. I have however always had this photo and always wondered: a) where is it? b) what is the car they are in? Vintage cars are not my speciality. I think it was taken around 1930. I know they lived somewhere around Hollyfast Road, though this could have been before then but in that area. My dad was born in 1937 and he went to Hill Farm School as a child so in that area perhaps? That is my grandad Laurence Yardley to the right with my 'nana' Rose driving! She was a bit of an adventurer having travelled quite a bit, and we have a few snaps of her riding motorbikes as well!

In my humble opinion it looks like a Bullnose Morris, judging by the radiator, military wheels and body shape

Yes it is a Bull Nose but exactly what model???? Perhaps a Cowley? It looks a bit like the Morris Oxford but I know that it's not as I owned one myself. Best of luck and hope you find the info that you want.

As some of you may recall I've mentioned research previously and my great great grandfather having been landlord of The Turks Head in Silver Street. Thought you might like to see this snippet I found from the 'Coventry Standard' dated December 20th 1862. They were very drunk as was indeed Yardley. 150 years on or so and not much changes!!

Wow yes great find Anne A lot of reading but very interesting to see of more 'Yardleys'!! We get everywhere!! Not heard of 'de Yardley' though but as mentioned before we are a very long standing family name within Coventry. I'm back to about 1780 and my lads are at least 7th generation Coventrians (although they started life in Berkswell but I'll keep that quiet!)

Neil - I don't know if this is one of your Yardleys? Coventry Standard - Friday 24 November 1848 COVENTRY POLICE OFFICE. Wednesday. Before R. K. Rotherham and R. Caldicott, Esqrs. Edwin Dalton was convicted of violently assaulting a poor young man of the name of William Yardley, at the Ram public-house, on Saturday night last, where he went to sell a few nuts; and in default of paying a fine of 3s., and 11s. 6d. costs, he was committed to gaol for 14 days. Dalton was the son of the landlord of the Ram (Absalom Dalton) and he married my great-grand aunt Catherine Sadler

Don't think so Cliff but thanks for sharing. Anne may have a William though?! There were two distinct Yardley families from Coventry going back over the years from what I can work out, from where we all descended.

My G Grandad was William but he was not born until 1850. I don't have any other Williams that would have been a young man in 1848. I couldn't even find one on Ancestry that would fit the bill (sorry). Thanks for the info though MR he may crop up sometime.

Hi Meirion, that is fantastic. As you may have read in previous posts John Yardley was my 3 x G Grandfather. You are so lucky to own this watch. I am still keeping my eyes open for one. My 3rd cousin managed to get one on ebay but I missed one and the one I posted about was a bit too expensive. Did you buy the watch or is it a family heirloom. I get very confused with hallmarks and am not an expert but the one thing I notice is that you say the watch was hallmarked in 1799 with the D. John Yardley was not born until 1811, I think this is more likely to be the Birmingham D which is 1852 which is also the date of the Nairn one.
