Radio and TV - Memories and Favourites

While at Stoke Council primary, Briton Road, I recall the schools broadcasts "Music and Movement" where we would dance and make imaginary movements in the hall. I don't recall listening to the radio in the infants department though. Back in the classroom we would join in "Singing Together", learning traditional folk songs, Linden Lea or even something classical like Schubert's "The Trout".

I can remember the name of the presenter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Lang_(actress) What is more, if my memory serves me well Listen with Mother was followed by Woman's Hour presented by Marjorie Anderson and I even recall some of the contributors, Jonquil Antony (who also wrote the scripts for Mrs Dale's Diary) and Ba Mason, probably because as a child to me they had 'funny' names.

Looking briefly at the site, Listen With Mother continued until at least 1980, though it was on Radio 4 by then.

I loved Listen With Mother but I think she enjoyed it as much as I and my sister and brother did. When I was at Ullathorne in the early to mid 60's we listened to a wonderful radio series which brought both classical and folk music into our classroom. They introduced the composers and then played some of their music. Our teacher - what was her name?- had some illustrations and information about the composers. We also enjoyed singing some of the folk songs and even some sea shanties.

Hello, I've listened this morning to CWR, paying attention to the music being played whilst I'm catching up with (paperwork). There's no paper, but you know what I mean. Anyway, I've listened for around 2&1/2 hours. Only one song played from recent additions. Most are pre-millennium. Ps. CWR are just playing another new song. Gosh! That says more about the era that I & most of our members grew up & thrived in. I certainly thrived. For seventy years, it was never going to end, I didn't want it to end. For so many it already has ended. We on our forum, are we keeping it going? What do we think?

Hi Philip. If I listen to the radio I prefer to listen to "our era " music even though it is on digital. If we watch TV it is mostly programmes that play reruns of old programmes and comedies. We are currently enjoying a comedy called Brass even though all these programmes have a note that they contain material that may be offensive !! There are a number of channels that play older stuff now which must reflect that current television does not have a lot to offer, and I am afraid I do find a lot of that "offensive" I still cook the same sort of stuff I always have, and even with all the fancy ideas about what you should eat I still think meat and 2 veg is pretty healthy. The trouble is the young will always decide their ways are best in everything !

Hi folks! There are a few exception but music post millennium has been rather unmemorable. TV hasn't been quite as lacking but good progs are still few and far between. Though, maybe we only remember the classics and forget the amount of dross that padded it out?

Yes I suppose so Helen, sometimes we start watching something we can't remember from the past and realise why we didn't watch it the first time round.

Rob and I were sharing comedy favourites. Black Books was familiar to us both but Rob's never tried Chelmsford 123. Classic British silliness (from the team that started with Who Dares Wins - Jimmy Mulville, Phillip Pope and Rory McGrath plus many others including Andy Hamilton). I thought that it could have gone further than 2 series.
