Dreamtime Over this side of Australia we have lots of koels - the loudest bird on the planet. They are quite big birds, a type of cuckoo actually, that lays its eggs in other bird's nests but, unlike the English ones, coexists happily with its host chicks. The male is all black with a red eye, while the female has a beautiful "hawk-like" spotted plumage. The male has two calls - one rather like a "coo-ee" (usually a C followed by an F, or doh-fah), and a more complicated call C-b-d-c-e-d-f-e! I found that I can mimic these calls by whistling, so we have lengthy conversations. I'm not sure, though, whether he considers me as a competitor for his lovely wife, or if he's just being friendly!

I love the calls of male and female tawny owls. She shrieks 'twit!' and he replies 'who whoooo?' Robins are very territorial birds and will fight to the death.
