All super recommendations - particularly Spon Street & Spon End, which is a very rare find nowadays..... even the author can't get hold of a copy! Wink

Appears that both those lots sold at a bargain price, and to the same buyer - I hope someone on here was the lucky recipient. Smile

Yes, it was me! and I couldn't believe nobody else bid for them. I've already got at least one copy of The Coventry We Have Lost already so if anyone wants the spare copy/copies when they arrive, just get in touch. Thumbs up

Slowly catching up on lots of old posts and pleased to have found both this and a copy of the book. Looking forward to the read. Thanks Helen.

I just bought a book - The Industrial Revolution in Coventry by John Prest. I've not delved very deep into it but it's got lots of pictures of houses and top shops built in that era plus their floor plans. One thing I'd previously noted but not understood was how rapidly development came to a screeching halt due to economic factors. 1860 saw the end of the ribbon weaving boom. There was a general strike, a depression, a change in international trade and Coventry plus its close neighbours were so affected that between 1861 and 1871, the population actually fell. Coventry lost 1,555, Foleshill 1,502, Stoke 314, Bedworth 498 and so on. Meanwhile other areas not tied to ribbon weaving saw increases in population eg Birmingham grew by 47,711 and Leicester by 27,164.

Another good standard book for any serious Coventry collection is the Victoria County History of Warwickshire, vol. VIII (the main volume containing the Coventry-related history). These normally tend to go for £60 to £80 and more, but this morning I received an email from Bennett & Kerr Books advertising their "Lent half price sale". They only have one Coventry book listed, and it's the one I've mentioned.... for just £30 Smile It's listed at number 368 of 389 - second to last page of the PDF in that link above. Importantly, they state this in their email.... We now have a new website, but for the present kindly order by direct email or by telephone. Thank you, Bennett & Kerr Books (ABA, ILAB) Church Lane, Steventon, Abingdon Oxfordshire OX13 6SW England Tel + 44 (0)1235 820604

A very nice example of this "must have" book, at a very nice starting price.... Coventry its History & Antiquities Benjamin Poole 1870 1st Edition. It looks like the spine has been renewed at some point, but the contents are what it's all about, eh!
