Mentioning the elderly and cut backs, there were none back in 2001, my mum couldn't get up the stairs or get into a bath in her mid 80s, they wouldn't fit a shower downstairs but there was room for one, she was told to strip wash, but fear of slipping and falling on the kind of tiles in the kitchen, she used to have to go outside put a towel on the line so no one could see her, with bowl and jug and shower herself that way. Having worked all her life and in the Jag during the war this is how you get treated. Today my 70 year old sister cant get into her bath, she too has been told the same strip wash, I ask myself what kind of world and era do we now live in. Also there are no houses being built here with these facilities for the elderly. As recent news stating of public disabled toilets not being adequate, they have stated there will be a lot more in the near future people being disabled and elderly, I ask why are houses not adapted nor built for this part of the population.

Sorry to learn of the problems your family have had Morgana. I am almost 82, about six months ago a nurse came to my home to take some blood and we discussed problems that I have. I had spinal cord damage and so have a number of problems. Few weeks later a man came from the council and it was decided that outside footpaths would need raising and steps changed to one gentle slope. Bathroom modifications was also discussed but I didn't like what was suggested so didn't bother with that. Couple of weeks later a gang turned up, altered my front fence and supplied a new gate. Thirty feet of footpath removed and new sloping path supplied and levelled off to the height of my backdoor sill and a new gate fitted on that path. Whole cost was £3,800 but it didn't cost me a penny.
Just old and knackered

I am so pleased they helped you Norman Conquest, the best kind of bathroom I've seen for with fear of not falling like you could even in a shower room is what was put in over Nuneaton, a cubicle it has a large door which is ground level sealed when closed with a seat with a shower, some have shallow baths with a fixed ledge to sit on, so you can hold on to the chair when getting up then the sides of the cubicle where one step and your out of the cubicle which is more suitable for people fear of falling.

As most of you know I chose to move back to Coventry from Lancashire recently. I have moved into sheltered accommodation and, after some initial worries, I am settling in very nicely. I have my own one-bedroomed flat which comprises living room, bedroom, kitchen and wet room complete with sturdy seat if I need to sit down while showering. It may take some a change of heart to give up the house they presently live in.

The new law is now that they can stay in their own homes, services will be bought to the house after being accessed. Most people would rather stay in their own homes where they have worked all their lives and would rather stay near friends and relatives and their community. Some have had to wait years up to 20 years in some cases to be housed, so when they do get offered where they want they don't want to give the house up and be put in an area away from what they know, so I don't blame them. While others have got housed immediately who come straight into the country then buy the houses after a few years leaving a shortage It's harder to adapt to moving as you get get older in most cases. It's harder for women to move than men in most cases.

Coventry City Council photostream. Click to right for more photos https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/coventrycc/16270858747/ No doubt council tax paid for this too per usual. Nice to see these photos flaunted in the face of those that are suffering the cutbacks of services and children that have to eat from food banks here in Coventry, even a man of the cloth, how he can face his congregation I don't know. I hear it's a trip to France for them too now. But don't forget we are all in it together - NOT.

The Coventry Order of Merit is to quote the council's website, 'a way of recognising and honouring personal behaviour that reflects the highest ideals of citizenship or outstanding performance in any field of human endeavour and which improves the good name of Coventry and inspires its residents.' Surely you have to have a presentation for those who have been given the award? In addition, the networking at such an event can only be good for the city - all those outstanding performers getting together. It is a sad fact that you need to spend money to generate more money.

Yes quite true try telling that to a parent who pays council tax then having to watch her child going without food, a feel good factor for presentation, what was up with donating the cost of that food and wine to the food bank, we still live in this upper class system don't we. What's up with what any other worker does, chip in the pot with their own money for these meals at special times especially when kids are going without and cuts to the weak and vunerable. Isn't that why they're on big wages and perks with good pensions to perform good for our city.

Morgana - I sympathise with anyone who does not have enough to eat, or who is waiting for an operation, or waiting weeks to see their doctor. However, the city of Coventry still needs to sell itself to the outside world and to convince businesses and other organisations that this is the place to do business. To do that you need to employ good people, pay them a good salary, and offer an attractive pension scheme. If you don't do that you will not get the best people. The posh presentations cost a lot of money, but hopefully will generate more business for the area. Having said that I hope there is someone who keeps a sensible check on what is spent, and the benefits gained. This is no time to waste money.

Lol Lol Lol nearly falling out of my chair with laughter on that Not Local. Isn't it the same people who sold the Ricoh at a big loss at the expense of the council tax payer. Then reading replies from Coventry Telegraph, two replies from the public reveal links they are going to be taking out another mortgage to finish off building the city because of the shortfall of the EU funding. Maybe we'll be privatised like London.

Sorry Morgana, I was talking about the theory, not necessarily the practice. In a private business any expenditure has to be justified. I was trying to say that Coventry City Council should also be keeping a check on what they spend, what benefits are gained through this expenditure, and whether they are getting good value. I will leave you to decide whether they are doing a good job or not.
