Hi everyone I don't know if anyone is able to help, George Maurice Marshall Wilson was born in Coventry 1850 he moved to South Shields to marry in 1875 Before 1875 absolutely no-one is able to find this man On the 1901 census this is what it states warlbeckghine coventry George Wilson (no middle names are on this census) His father was called George as it states this on wedding certificate and I think the father was a draper Has anyone any ideas at all about the place and why no one can find him, much appreciated any shots in the dark Smile

Totally a shot in the dark and very tenuous - he may be the George Wilson (misspelled as Willson) with parents Richard and Hannah in Leicestershire on the 1851, with his grandparents, surname Sheffield, in Leicester in 1861, and with his parents in Sheerness, Kent, in 1871, when he was a draper's assistant. A Richard Wilson married a Hannah Sheffield in Leicestershire in 1843. If this is your George, the only member of the family born in Coventry, he may have been born in 1848. Let us know how you get on with this conundrum!

Primrose I was told they were the wrong parents as that George married someone else and was in London after 1875 not South Shields and George M M Wilson's father was called George at first I had them as parents due to the fact George M M Wilson's son was called Richard Marshall Wilson I have been hunting now for over a yr and sometimes I think there is a connection somehow with the Richard and Hannah parents but cannot work it out lol Thanks so much for your efforts it's appreciated someone else said the Crimea could play a part in it or was he illegitimate but then would his father's name be on wedding cert and where the Maurice bit came from I ain't got a clue as it's not a name that comes down through the family Roll eyes

Have you tried on the Mormons records free search you need mothers name to track the birth. Mill on the Floss George Eliot mentions L P Wilson Griff House. I seen on the Mormon site under marriage a George M M up north but I didn't go into it think it said South Shields also one in Kent with the same

Hi Sooty. I think the birth place on the 1901 census says Warlbeck Lane, Coventry. I have never heard of it but maybe someone on here can help you. I have found a Mary A Wilson living with John Marshall who is her grandfather in 1891 and 1901 but this can't be the Mary A who is daughter to George from Coventry as she is with him in 1901. I have a couple of people in my family tree with these double names and I have found in both cases that it is a name from the mother or grandmothers side of the family. Good luck with your search.

Hi Sooty Just another thought. Maybe George M M's father was a travelling Haberdasher, travelling round with his wife to villages selling his wares. He could have gone to Coventry to buy ribbons and happened to be there when baby George was born. I suggest this as I have recently helped a friend with her family tree and could not find one of her families on any census. With a few clues I eventually found that they were on the canals and were not recorded. I wonder if the same could be said for travellers if they were on the road at the time the census was taken. If you don't think that is the case, have you tried looking for George's father in directories if he had a haberdashers shop.

I was wondering whether 'Warlbeck Lane' could be 'Warwick Lane', I did find a Richard Wilson b.1816, living in Warwick Lane, Millwright on the 1841 Census, could be a relation of George Wilson Senior? That's all a bit 'airy-fairy' but thought it was worth mentioning. I haven't looked any further regarding Richard Wilson's siblings in Parish Records. I did find a 'George Morris M. Wilson', death, 1906 . Born abt. 1849, died age 57 years, Newcastle-upon -Tyne. 1891 Census, George Wilson, Ironmonger Assistant, living at 15, Edward St. Westgate, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, there was a Jane Dixon, aged 80 years living with them, presumably his mother-in-law. You did mention he married a Dixon. I think you are aware of the 1901 Census. 52 Monday Street, Westgate. Maybe some of these jottings may help the cause..

Found a Daniel Marshall Wilson son of William ad Hannah Wilson baptised in Warwick in 1841. It could be that the name Marshall goes back a long way. I have a middle name that occurs in most generations in my family tree in different families that goes back to a marriage in 1752!
