Warwick Road Goods Yard & Grosvenor Road Footbridge

That takes me back to my schooldays. Those of us who walked into town to get the bus walked down Warwick Road. As soon as we neared that building, the lads who smoked decided it was time to light up as they were out of sight of the school. Even back in the 60s, there never appeared to be much if any activity in that building.

That's a great shot of the Goods Yard. It was on my patch back in the late 1960's when I was one of three uniform BTP constables based at Coventry. By then the old Midland shed and associated trackwork had gone but there was a long siding whose main use was for the newspaper train to disgorge its bundles into the various vans that arrived, along with local police getting their freebies! Just to get orientated on that photo. Following the ramp down to Grosvenor Road, on the railway side there was still a brick building in my time but there was also a staff canteen of more modern construction but I can't date it. The Foreman's house was still there in the 60's and my immediate boss, a Detective Sergeant, lived there with his family. British Railways had a great property portfolio and houses all over the place which were advertised for rental amongst the staff. I'm new to this forum and having gone through all the comments I noted there was some debate as to where The Specials had been photographed. It was actually on the ramp from the old stable block on the Warwick Road side of the Goods Yard. On that excellent photo showing the LNWR Goods Offices there is an archway with double gates on the left side of the building and this would have led into the area of those stables. In my time they were just used as stores. Heading up the Warwick Road and just over the bridge over the tracks and on the right had side was the RMD. Road Motor Department, which serviced all motorised vehicles used by the railway. That included the BTP police car! The railway cottages behind the RMD were still there when I was at Coventry and I would look in occasionally whilst on patrol to see if there were any signs of 'rough sleepers'. That's all for now.
