Whilst looking for something else I stumbled on this one in the 1912 Directory which I don't think I've seen before and can't actually place that corner. I thought it was the Anslows building on High St tbh when I first saw it..............

It's one of the later buildings on the north side of the road into the market.

The changing view of Broadgate. Note that Broadgate was just the road up the left until it was widened into the large 'square' we are more familiar with. In the first image, the square was actually part of Cross Cheaping. Where the cross was.

In an ideal world we'd be able to move the timeline forward but there is a limited number of images available to try and match but compare the maps below. The dots and dotted lines show the key points for the pictures in the post above. After the war, things change much more than you'd think. Broadgate has moved about like you wouldn't believe.
Side by side maps at the Library of Scotland here.
The result with old postcards is almost meaningless.
Since Cathedral Lanes now sticks out so that there is no view of the bank from due north, an image from modern day Broadgate is even harder to match. In fact the only bit of the Broadgate in the first painting that is still visible to the sun is a bit south of Cathedral Lanes right here.
Side note, I had a good look on ebay for images like the ones above but before I bought/copied them, I thought I'd check the unwanted pile in my collection, where I'd bought bundles containing several cards I actually wanted. Hey presto, there they were. Saved myself about £16! |

A search of the newspapers an article says the Mayor's Parlour cafe was built on an old court house.

I think the location matches the original Mayor's Parlour which was Waterloo House in the photo below, although without overlaying the maps it's hard to tell if there was an exact overlap. Could it have held court cases? Or did the article mean court as in houses round a yard?

I did think that it might have meant that sort of building Helen. It seems strange to name a cafe the Mayor's Parlour if it was not there. I will have another look through the newspaper when I can.
