CovKid41. I went to the Bill Haley concert at the Gaumont Cinema, very good show. You mention a friend named John Probert. I wonder if he is the same John Probert that I knew at the time I attended Stoke Heath Primary School. The John I knew then lived in Alliance Way, Stoke Heath.
I'm a bit late finding this post but it answers my confusion as to where I had seen Bill Haley and the Comets when he brought Rock & Roll to Coventry. My problem was it Gaumont or Coventry Theatre?. Well Rock On or maybe Around the Clock

I saw Cliff Richard at the Coventry Theatre - way back when. A good night watching him prance all over the stage.
All the stage back drop was set up like stacks of records of songs he had recorded. Very clever the way it was done. Must have been in the 60's. We were sitting 'up in the Gods' and I was expecting my daughter at the time and the vibration had everyone stamping their feet to the music.

Mick - Cliff was certainly with The Shadows in 1963 because I saw them in the film 'Summer Holiday' from the front row of The Clifton Cinema in Leamington. I was 13 and was with a bunch of my mates.

Cliff first appeared at The Coventry Theatre for a few days in March and April 1959 in a variety show, he was then listed with the Drifters (who became the Shadows), appeared with the Shadows in March 1963. I was not so much a Cliff fan but I did see the Beatles and Adam Faith later that year. Other stars I can remember seeing were Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. Lots I can't remember, sadly the programmes I saved got lost at some point. Later in the 60's I saw many bands, probably quite new at the time at the Lanchester and the Matrix and local bands would play in the local pubs until more disco came in. A particular one I remember was Jigsaw.

I'm not sure that I've ever been to something that could be officially called a concert.

Small Faces at Chesford Grange Kenilworth. Vague memory of them playing behind a fence (later utilised by the Blues Brothers). Very very short set and I was bloody annoyed.
My young brother went to Chesford Grange on 24 August 1968 to see the Small Faces. He also came home with the tale of seeing the group through a wire mesh barrier and their set only lasting 40 minutes. He was not a happy chap.
About this time he came home with news of the following week's group - apparently it was someone called John Mayall who had a good guitarist. Neither my 15 year old brother or my 18 year old self knew who this was so we missed out on the group advertised as 'John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (with Eric Clapton)'.
I made up for it in subsequent years seeing many well know groups and artists. In February 1970 I took a young lady to one of these shows for our first date. We were engaged in 1972, married in 1973, and are still going strong.
