Hi all, I think I have found more images of the Swanswell Crimean Gun. These are postcards, the first one was posted in 1935, the second is unposted. Looks like the breech end in this one. Given the position of the gun in relation to the boating kiosk in the first image I reckon this is the same gun.

Isn't it weird how many details you don't see the first time you look at a photo... or the second... or the... The other thing that throws me is how hard it is to imagine the working mill ponds from their Victorian parks.

A long time after Millie asked the question but this from BFA shows White Street from the north. Swanswell Pool is in the bottom third of the photo, in the middle. On the other side of the road to the pool, to the right of the mill, there is a house that may have been number 1 before all the other houses were built. By the 50s it was number 35 and on the corner of Wheatley Street. Number 1 was on the corner of Ford Street to the right. The building opposite Swanswell Pool had gained a single storey extension to the front and side, changing both the footprint and appearance. I can't tell if it's the same building as that on the 1850 map. By the way, there's a good view of the back of Cook Street.

Clever thinking, Helen, especially if you were not even looking for a gun. I keep looking for the old clocks on the older photos. I must have a phobia about them.

Hi Prof, a tough image to choose a topic to put it in but the horses are on the track that was to become White Street. The Swanswell Pool was behind and to the left of the artist. Off some distance to the right was the Cook Street gate. The picket fence on the right enclosed vegetable plots.

White Street a bit further SE of the Pool - I think they would be something like No's.2-6 about to disappear on the right - looking at the cars probably in readiness for the Ring Road -

Not sure if anyone recognises themselves but © Elizabeth Tyler once more - Swanswell Pool looking east. The section behind was the rear of the properties on Swanswell Street which faced the junction with Weston Street. Elizabeth thinks this is Autumn 1963 -
