Was wondering, when do you think that Sewall Highway was built? Also wonder, how long it took to build from one end to the other. My parents moved into 321, in about 1937. I am not aware as to whether it was new or not. It was rented for their entire lives, until the mid 1980's. Remember as teenagers, my sister and I use to go into town, mid 1950's, to Greyfriars Green to pay the rent, at Frank Mason, Newey & Co, Estate Agents, on a Saturday morning, £1.2s.4d. Happy days.

Hi slash1, Sewall Highway was built in stages, the first at the Pippin & at the Bell Green end. The last part wasn't completed until 1956, a short section near to Blackberry Lane. Am sure folks can add more to this. Hope you're ok. There is a separate thread on the subject of Sewall Highway.

Am aware of most of that. Was born in 1944, so was very well aware of the new buildings between Dennis Road and Blackberry Lane. In our youth we would never have wandered very far away from our area, but I was never, at any stage, aware of the rest of Sewall Highway being built in my lifetime. I have asked the question in the past, I never got a convincing answer as to why the land between Dennis Road and Blackberry Lane was never built on at the same time as the rest of it?

Sewall Highway Try stepping back and forth through the maps. My guess would be that it would be a mix of rate of demand for housing, ward policy differences, different developers and maybe a stubborn owner.

Hi all, The two people that might have been able to answer the question that I knew are no longer alive. Area development depends on funding & ease of access for services, fluid in particular. Until the last mid century, sewage from that area was treated at a sewage plant situated between Sullivan Rd & Henley Rd. The remains of the treatment plant are still visible. With local government post-war dosh very tight, the huge costs of sewage plumbing capital, work that the north side of Coventry witnessed progressively from the fifties onwards, just wasn't available. That's my only thoughts to the sectional development of Sewall Highway. Sewage back-up is always a big issue with housing development. If sewage treatment is inadequate, someone flushing their loo at the top of Sewall Highway, it might have reappeared in houses by the Devon, or the Devon itself. Quote from Victoria History of Coventry. "

I would beg to differ. I am pretty sure the Bell Green end was built first, from the dip up to the Walsgrave end later, 1930 about, and I believe started within months of the Morris Works, but once again Annewiggy can find from the Telegraph or was that still the old name? I don't believe Sullivan Road was built until after 1931, but not sure.

Kaga. The last part to be completed was adjacent to Blackberry Lane. There is photographic evidence of the Pippin end on photos dated 1935. I've no knowledge of the Bell Green end. The Bell Green end may have been started first. We are trying to find out. It's question & query, that's all.

My mum moved to Bell Green in 1937 at the age of nine. She says that Sewall Highway was built from the Bell Green Road to Blackberry Lane before the war. From Blackberry Lane to the Wyken part of Sewall Highway there were allotments until after the war. She believes the Wyken end was built first but cannot be positive.

A small point to you, a very large one to me. VE or VJ? There was a vast difference, like a couple of atom bombs that caused a huge change of direction for a score of ships. Easy to wash over today but at the time, an enormous cliffhanger of fear, danger, heartache, to millions of men and women in the forces. One was only part of the big picture, the other changed the whole world in thought and movement.

I guess 53 Caludon Road must have been the address of the photographer.... https://www.google.com/maps/ It's only a slim possibility, but I wonder if this other postcard on eBay, on the corner of nearby Hastings Road, could be the same shop at a different time?
